He graduated from The University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1960, completed his residency at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in 1962 and served as the Senior Research Fellow at Aberdeen University from 1964 to 1971, during which time he also completed a Research Fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the University of Florida. He then moved to London as a Senior Lecturer at the Wright-Fleming Institute, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School from 1971 to 1973. Dr. Philp and his family then immigrated to the United States where he continued his academic career at Wake Forest University's Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, joining the Division of Infectious Diseases in 1973 and being appointed Professor of Medicine in 1977. Dr. Philp was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder. He had a strong personal interest in Theological Philosophy and was a gifted violinist and vocalist. These gifts, along with his vibrant personality, provided many memorable occasions with family and friends. Dr. Philp taught me more about the medical examination of patients than any other teacher or book ever did. His knowledge, learned in Scotland before the use of labs and CT scans, was passed on to me at the bedside.
Look, feel, smell, and listen. The patient will reveal his health or illness.
Brilliant teaching that has helped me save lives.
I think of him often as the practice of medicine leads me to listen.
God's blessings to all.

Dear Elizabeth and family,
It was such a shock to learn that Jim has died. He has always been such a "presence" in the world, and had such an impact on my life--both personally and professionally. I shall remember the good times.

Dear Elizabeth and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Jim's death. We fondly remember attending the Robbie Burns dinner (and eating the haggis!) at Graylyn, and the wonderful New Years Eve parties at your home (one to which John wore his kilt BACKWARDS!). I also remember winning the beer questionnaire contest at the CAME meeting in Ottawa, to Jim's chagrin.
You were my first woman family physician, and because of my admiration for you and your skills, I've had nothing else since. All of them have been outstanding, and all of them either Bowman Gray faculty or graduates! We miss you!
Love, John and Joan Tolmie, Mooresville NCC
