Dr. Philp taught me more about the medical examination of patients than any other teacher or book ever did. His knowledge, learned in Scotland before the use of labs and CT scans, was passed on to me at the bedside.
Look, feel, smell, and listen. The patient will reveal his health or illness.
Brilliant teaching that has helped me save lives.
I think of him often as the practice of medicine leads me to listen.
God's blessings to all.

Dear Elizabeth and family,
It was such a shock to learn that Jim has died. He has always been such a "presence" in the world, and had such an impact on my life--both personally and professionally. I shall remember the good times.

Dear Elizabeth and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Jim's death. We fondly remember attending the Robbie Burns dinner (and eating the haggis!) at Graylyn, and the wonderful New Years Eve parties at your home (one to which John wore his kilt BACKWARDS!). I also remember winning the beer questionnaire contest at the CAME meeting in Ottawa, to Jim's chagrin.
You were my first woman family physician, and because of my admiration for you and your skills, I've had nothing else since. All of them have been outstanding, and all of them either Bowman Gray faculty or graduates! We miss you!
Love, John and Joan Tolmie, Mooresville NCC

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Dr. Philp a few times. I was a patient of his wife and in a support group for Diabetes. They were both so super nice. He will be missed. Dr. Philp I still miss you being my Doctor.
God Bless your family.
