James Overby Obituary

James M. Overby Summerville - James M. Overby, 74, of Summerville, South Carolina, husband of Eleanor Friar Overby, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, November 15, 2022. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 in the Northwoods Apple on Green Ridge Rd, at 1:30pm. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel. James was born November 1, 1948 in Chester, South Carolina, son of the late Dan Edward Overby and Lucinda Wade Overby. He was employed as a Pipe Fitter at the Naval Shipyard for 30+ years. After his retirement, he enjoyed working at Walmart in the Sporting Goods department. He was a long-standing member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. James was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Palmetto Gun Club, a Lifetime Member of the NRA and even held office in the South Carolina Shooting Association. He was also a Lifetime Adult Member of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and a Hunter Education Instructor with the SCDNR. He was also a member of the Sports Car Club of America, in which he enjoyed working in the pit for the Mini Cooper races. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years; one daughter, Katherine Smith (Donnie) of Bonneau, SC; three grandchildren, Carter, Hunter and Addison Smith; one sister, Debra Ann Overby; three sisters-in-law and their spouses, and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dan Edward Overby, Jr., and infant brother, Dale Walker Overby. We still miss James and think of him often, especially during football season when we would pool our change to pay for gas so he could drive us to or from a game in the "Tank". We shared many laughs. He was a great friend.
