James Noland Obituary

James Madison Noland II RAVENEL, SC - James Madison Noland II died at home in Ravenel, SC on Thursday, July 16, 2020. He was Born February 18, 1934 in the family home on Walnut Street in Waynesville, NC. He was the second son of Dewey Harrison Noland and his wife, Lillian Fields Hooks Noland. Known to the family as "Jim", he spent the first six years of his life in Waynesville surrounded by friends and a gaggle of first cousins. He, with his family, moved to Alexandria, VA in 1939. His family returned to Waynesville each summer for an extended vacation which provided days filled with camping and fishing with his male cousins. These excursions into the mountains led to an abiding love for the mountains and especially Cataloochee Valley. His love for Cataloochee remained throughout his life. Jim subsequently graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy and enrolled in NC State College. Before graduation he enlisted in the US Army and spent a tour of duty in Germany. Upon discharge, he returned to NC State and graduated with a degree in industrial management. After working for Burlington industries and Miller Brewing Company, Jim joined Michelin Tire Corp. in 1976 and retired in 1999. James Madison Noland II is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Julia White Noland, two sons: James Madison Noland III and Patrick Ferguson Noland, two daughters-in-law: Katherine Hansen Noland and Leslie Abercrombie Noland and four grandchildren: William Harrison Noland, Helen (Hallie) Ellyson Noland, Christopher James Noland, and Lillian Hansen Noland, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Old St. Andrew's Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414 or Hospice of Charleston, 4975 LaCross Road, Suite 200, North Charleston, SC 29406. A funeral service will be held at a future date in Charleston, SC. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Even as the years move on, there are those events and/or persons who move along with you as a memory. Jim Noland fits that description without a doubt. I reside close to Michelin's headquarter in Greenville. Needless to say, I see that facility every day of my life and memories of Jim are with me.

Julia and Family ~ Upon the anniversary of Jim's passing, we paused to reflect on our relationship. An Old English Proverb says it best: "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but memories no one can steal." Forever in our hearts.

Although we are approaching the one year Anniversary of Jim's passing, the memories keep him present in my mind quite clearly. He was a true Brother who was always available. My children considered Jim an Uncle. My prayers go out to the Noland Family for their loss.

Julia and Family,
Kerry and I can't tell you how much we thought of Jim. He had incredible people skills with the ability to teach them to others. He had fun and enjoyed life. You can't replace him. May God Bless.

Mr Noland was one of the finest men that I have had the pleasure of knowing. At an early age and for many years Jim has had a huge impact on my life and also that of my son. I have the fondest memories of our families times together in France when Jim and my Dad (Ron Rossi Sr) started their careers with Michelin. Being in Jim's presence was always filled with happiness, great family times and sincere laughter. He along with Julia, most recently where a key support during my son's years at The Citadel. He truly was a life long friend and always gave his all to family and friends. You will be thought of often and missed forever Jim. Thank you for ALL that you did for me and my family!!

Mr Noland and I met about five years ago when I moved to Charleston. At that time I was just the new guy at the bank, but I soon became his trusted banker, and I'd like to think, a friend. I'll miss Mr Noland's voice on the phone when he'd call for an appointment, or when he'd be in the lobby and would say hello to me from the teller line. My deepest condolences go out to Ms Julia and his family. Mr Noland was a great man, and I'm honored to have known him for a small part of my life.

This is the saddest news that I have had in some time. Jim was very instrumental in my career at Michelin and played a huge role in my family and children's lives. He was always there when decisions were needed and his guidance was invaluable when moves and uncertainty seemed unclear. He was bigger than life yet had a heart of gold. My measuring stick as a manager and as a person. God Bless Jim and his family.

I had the Honor of meeting Jim in Sept 1976 when we both joined Michelin. Our respective family's ventured to France to learn about our new employer. At that time we did not realize that we would become close family friends. Many stories and memories exist between us and a few of them will remain close to the vest. I am thankful that I will always have memories which will allow me to never forget Jim. May his soul rest in Peace. Bon Voyage, Mon Ami.

Jim was the guy at work you looked to to provide wisdom on how to handle a personnel issue fairly. If you worked for Jim you knew he would have your back ( if you were right) no matter who he had to confront to defend you! May he rest in peace knowing he always took the high road!
