James Montgomery Obituary

James Bernard Montgomery Ravenel, SC - James Bernard "Poppy" Montgomery, 90, of Ravenel, SC, entered into eternal rest peacefully at his daughter's home, surrounded by his loving family Monday July 19, 2021. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel. JB was born February 6, 1931 in Conway, SC, son of the late Charlie Mack Montgomery and the late Magnolia Ward. He retired from the US Navy as a 1st Class Boatswain's Mate with 20 years of service having completing seven tours. He served aboard the USS Grand Canyon, USS Noa, USS Cogswell, USS Saratoga, USS Monvoria, USS Westchester County, USS Pick Away, and the USS Observation Island. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, trips to the farmers market with his brother CB, and sharing the fruits of his labor. He was happiest spending time with family and friends. He will always be remembered for his generosity, quick wit, work ethic, and his love of family. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice "Jeanne" Montgomery (1989), and son, Kenny Montgomery (1976). He showed incredible strength during these losses, a testament to the way he lived his life. He shared a very special bond with his daughter, Berni. This was evident to all who knew them. He had the same pride and love for his granddaughter, Ashley, and his great-granddaughter, Mallie Gray. His foster son, Darren, was an incredible blessing after the loss of his son Kenny. They too shared a special, lifelong relationship. He is survived by his daughter, Bernardine M. Rozier of Charleston, SC; granddaughter, Ashley Rozier (James) McCorkle, great-granddaughter, Mallie Gray McCorkle all of Hollywood, SC; foster son, Darren (Lori) Shand; foster grandsons, Branden Shand; Timothy (Savannah) and great-grandson, Mason Shand, all of Panama City, Fla; brother, Delene "CB" Montgomery of Ravenel, SC, and many special nieces and nephews. JB is also preceded in death by his brothers, O'Dell Montgomery, Mack Leonidas Montgomery, and Bobby Montgomery; and his sisters, Erlene Hewitt, Bernice Allen, Magdalene Roberts, Effie Montgomery, and Edna Edwards. In lieu flowers, memorials may be made to Freedom Service Dogs of America or the Charleston American Legion. The family would like to thank Crescent Hospice Staff for their excellent and loving care. His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, July 25, 2021 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:30 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at Riverview Memorial Park, 3715 Azalea Dr. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the West Ashley Chapel from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. I am very sad to learn of the passing of Uncle JB. He was a great influence in my life. He gave me my love of gardening. Some of my best memories are of helping in the garden at the house. Also, getting to eat the fried squash he made was always a special treat for me. He was a good man.

My husband and I met this wonderful man when he built his home next door to us. We became fast friends, especially my husband and JB, always meeting in each others yards for many chats. We were among the lucky ones that enjoyed the fruits of his labor and JB was always there to lend a helping hand. So much I could say. Berni my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. JB will be greatly missed by those of us who knew and loved him. With Deepest Sympathy.
