James and I grew up together in George Legare Homes in North Charleston, SC. It was then called Naval Base, SC with no ZIP Code. He was a year older and we always had a pick up ball game going on somewhere in the project. My most memorable moment of James was actually with our mothers. We both lived in two story apartments and he and my older brother strung a tin can telephone between their upstairs bedrooms. The moms just happened to be cleaning the rooms at the same time when my mother picked up the can and said hello and scared Mrs. Merchant to death until she realized what it was. Neither family had a phone at the time but they had a nice conversation with the homemade telephone. I lost touch with James after we moved but remember him and his sister Frances fondly. May he rest in peace with his deceased loved ones.

Jim Merchant and I had a lot in common as I was retired from the Army National Guard. I lived on the same street and played golf with him a couple of times. I also served on the home owners association board when Jim was President. Jim was always thinking ahead and determining what need to be done in our neighborhood. He had lots of energy and was motivated. He was a great person to know and to work with a great attitude on life. It was so sad he lost his wife and son several years ago, I was saddened to read of his passing in the local paper today. I have fond memories of him and my condolences to Robert. If I ever go to Arlington cemetery again I will look for him. Sincerely Ken Forrester
