James McGregor Obituary

James McGregor N. CHARLESTON - James McGregor, 86, of North Charleston, SC, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024. James was born on October 7, 1937, in Saint Claire, MI, a son of the late Thomas McGregor and Mildred DeMars McGregor. He married his first wife, Arlene McGregor in 1961, and spent years with her until her passing 1977. He then married Grace Driggers McGregor and spent years with her until her passing in 2017. James served in the US Army from 1954-1957. He joined the US Navy in 1957, serving on the DER 316, SS 303, SSN 604, AS-18, and completed several deterence patrols on SSBN 599, SSBN 631, and SSBN 630. He retired from the Navy in 1974 as a Senior Chief. Following his service, he started at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1975 to 1993 as a Shift Test Director, testing various systems in the engineering spaces of submarines. He is survived by his children: Colleen Carte (Jack), Kathleen Lynn McGregor (Dan), Michael Scott McGregor (Gabrielle), Joseph McGregor (Debbie), Sandra Wood (Sam), Carol McGregor, Donna McGregor, Ed Yates, Billy Yates (Sandra), Lorry Anderson (Richard), Don Yates, and Abbyann McGregor; 25 beloved grandchildren; as well as 15 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two children, Patrick James and Keith Yates; as well as siblings, Abbyann McGregor and Diana Andres. A Visitation of family and friends will be held on Friday, July 5, 2024, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483. The Funeral Service will begin at 1:00pm in the chapel. Burial will immediately follow at Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
