James McAlister Obituary

James Reilly McAlister III CHARLESTON - James Reilly McAlister III, 51, of Charleston, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 of medical complications following a brief illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 95 Hasell St., Charleston. Jamie was born in Charleston on May 7, 1971, the son of James Reilly McAlister, Jr. and Patricia H. McAlister. He attended Miss Mason's School and graduated 3rd in his class from Bishop England High School. He went on to complete his Bachelor's Degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, finishing with Cum Laude distinction. Following graduation, he worked at the Department of Justice, recruiting new hires. Jamie then earned his MBA from the London School of Economics in England, again graduating Cum Laude. From there, Jamie went on to work at Price Waterhouse and WCI (World Class International). He returned to Charleston to work in the field of cybersecurity, most recently with Sentar. Jamie cared deeply for those close to him and took pride in being a Charlestonian. He was an active member of The Hibernian Society and also volunteered for the March of Dimes by serving on the Chef's Auction Committee. Additionally, he helped plan the Ball of the Bells to raise money for the replacement of the bells and steeple at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Jamie loved traveling and enjoyed visits to England, Italy, and Switzerland. Making close friends along the way, he even attended the baptism of the daughter of the King and Queen of Jordan. Every year on the first Sunday in December, he became known for opening his home on Broad Street to friends and family for front row seats at the City's Christmas parade. Cherished friends enjoyed the party's love, laughter, and refreshments while many of the younger guests could be found climbing the sprawling oak tree in his courtyard. Jamie was quick-witted, smart, and funny. His friendship and generosity were treasured by many. He will be missed by all who held him dear and all whom he held dear. His death has created a space in our hearts that will never be filled. Jamie is survived by his parents, James R. and Patricia H. McAlister; his sister, Pauline McAlister Lady and brother-in-law, James E. Lady; his aunt, Patricia McAlister Lovingood; cousins, Reilly Lovingood, David Van Lenten, and Paul Van Lenten. "Uncle Bobo" will also be missed by his nieces, Jamie Eleanor Lady, Grace McAlister Lady, and Claire Reilly Lady and nephew, Patrick Lehman Lady. He was predeceased by his cousin, Charley Lovingood, and his aunt, Virginia McAlister Van Lenten. The family would like to thank the nursing staff on the 5th floor and Dr. Garrett Cole of MUSC for all their kindness during Jamie's time in the hospital. "Receive his soul, oh Lord, and grant him Your healing and compassionate Presence." Godspeed, Boop. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Feline Rescue, 593 Fairview Avenue North, St. Paul MN 55104 (www.felinerescue.org). Arrangements by James A. McAlister, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston (843) 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Jamie and I first met when we had a shift together at Saxa Sundries while at Georgetown. His very quick and dry sense of humor made us fast friends. You could always pick right up where left off with Jamie regardless of the time that had passed since you last saw each other. He was that kind of friend. I will miss him terribly and am very thankful for the time and memories we had together. Sending love and condolences to his family and many friends.

I was privileged to have Jamie in my English class at BEHS. I won´t say I taught him because he was so bright already! What he brought to our discussions and his sense of humor brightened my days. His passing is a terrible loss for the family and the community. I was blessed to know him in my career.

We will both truly miss Jamie. Thomas has so many memories of Jamie through the years that I love to hear. He was so kind to me from the moment we met. For a wedding present, Jamie had our wedding invitation matted and framed and it is beautiful! This is just one small example of what a kind heart he truly had. All the love to your family from the McInerney's..

I was friends with Jamie in high school. He was already, as a young man, brilliant, funny, genteel, and very kind to me, a military kid who had arrived in Charleston my sophomore year and who knew no one. The last time I saw him, in a stroke of luck, we ran into each other at a DC metro stop, of all places, when he was clerking in Washington in the mid-90s. Have not forgotten his kindness and friendship to me, and will never forget his sense of humor and patience as he tried to teach me how to play tennis. Heartfelt prayers for his family and friends. Sincerely, Anne (Redd) Chamberlin

I met Jamie at Georgetown and we became fast friends. I called him Peanut, can´t recall why but he allowed it. Jamie was always making me laugh. My brain is now filled with memories of sitting together at the Tombs, staying up late in my Henle apt waiting for our Niagara pizza delivery, a great road trip to Kiawah Island with his parents (featuring boiled peanuts and an alligator sighting), Jamie making me request the DJ play `Salisbury Hill´ and `Strokin´ at F.Scott´s, and all sorts of shenanigans. Jamie had a big heart and a snarky wit that I miss so much. Rest In Peace, Peanut.
