James Marshall Obituary

James Allen Marshall AIKEN, SC - Captain James Allen "Al" Marshall US Navy (RET.), 83, of Aiken, SC, passed away on February 7, 2024. He was born in Annapolis, MD, the son of the late CDR James Gilbert Marshall and Mary Emma Allen Marshall. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962. He entered the Submarine Force, serving on six nuclear submarines, two of which he commanded - USS Shark (SSN591) and Commissioning CO of USS San Francisco (SSN711). He had of tour of duty at BUPERS and was on 7th Fleet Staff Yokosuka, Japan. He was CO of Submarine Base Pearl Harbor and finished his 30-year career as Chief of Staff at COMOPTEVFOR in Norfolk, VA. While there he received a Master of Science degree in Education from Old Dominion University. After retirement, he worked at Savannah River Site for several years. He was also involved with tennis officiating and was a past president of USTA-SC. He was also past president of MOAA. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phoebe; his son, James Marshall (Andrea); his daughter, Lee Heath (Greg); his sister, Mary Lee Sprague (Herb); grandsons, James and Shannon Marshall, Owen Heath; granddaughters, Lydia and Evelyn Heath; step-grandsons, Andrew, Alexander, and Asher Turpin. My first JO tour was on Shark. Cdr Marshall was an incredible Commanding Officer and inspiration to all.

He will be missed.

Captain Al was a great Commanding Officer of mine on USS Shark (SSN-591). He loved his crew,,and took care of each and everyone of us.

Dear Phoebe, family and friends of Al,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Al´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Henry Clay SSBN-625, USS Pargo SSN-650, USS Lewis and Clark SSBN-644, USS John C Calhoun SSBN-630, and as Commanding Officer of USS Shark SSN-591 and USS San Francisco SSN-711.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
