James Hurteau Obituary

James Stannard Hurteau, Sr. Charleston - James Stannard (Stan) Hurteau, Sr., 76, of Charleston, husband of Sharon Caswell Hurteau, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. Stanard Hurteau, Sr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at the Summerall Chapel-The Citadel. A reception will follow in Mark Clark Hall. Interment will be private. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Stan was born in Columbia, SC on December 23, 1941, to the late George Elmer and Helen Meridian Coleman Hurteau. He graduated from The Citadel in 1965 and served in various leadership positions. Stan was a member of the Board of Visitors, the college's governing body and as a past president of The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a member of the original steering committee that formed the college's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and was named the Citadel Foundation's executive director in December 1991, a position he held for 17 years. Of the many contributions he made during his tenure at The Citadel, one of the first was changing the organization's name from The Brigadier Club that was chartered in 1957 to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Stan also played a primary role in building the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Prior to his work at The Citadel, Stan spent 27 years in the local banking industry holding executive positions at SC National, Liberty National, Southern Bank and Trust and The Bank of Charleston. During this time he earned a graduate degree from the LSU School of Banking of the South. Stan also held memberships in the Hibernian Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, the SC Bankers' Association, Ducks Unlimited, SC Saltwater Fishing Association, Ravenwood Hunt Club and the Rookie IV Sport Fishing Team. He also loved to watch Citadel football, baseball, and his grandchildren's soccer games. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon C. Hurteau; his son, James Stannard Hurteau, Jr. and his wife, Jamye Horres Hurteau; and grandchildren Caroline Taylor and James Stannard Hurteau III all of Charleston. He is also survived by his brother, Brigadier General Joseph Coleman Hurteau, Sr. and his wife, Minnie as well as two nieces and a nephew. The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to Angelena, Barbara, Kena, and Sherline as well as the fourth floor nurses at Roper Hospital and Mr. Eddie for the outstanding care they provided Stan and his family. Memorial contributions can be made to: The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, SC 29409 or Pet Helpers Adoption Center, 1447 Folly Rd., Charleston, SC 29412. Stan was a wonderful person. He was a positive, motivating force in my life, as well as the lives of many other cadets. I, as many others, will miss him dearly. Through his work at The Citadel, Stan laid a solid foundation that benefits current and future cadets. Numerous cadet athletes had the opportunity to attend The Citadel because of Stan's hard work and dedication. Stan truly made The Citadel and the world a better place.

To the family and close friends of Stan Hurteau, I offer my condolences on his death. Stan was a respectful gentleman, and a man of integrity who was supportive and encouraging. We worked together when I was employed in the former South Carolina National Bank's loan department, and at the former Liberty/Southern National Bank. He was a wonderful person to work for, and had a great personality. He was always willing to listen to your ideas and did what he could to help you accomplish it. I have not seen Stan in many years, but think of him every now and then. He made a huge impact on my life and the lives of all that worked with and for him. You have my deepest sympathy and may his soul rest in the Lord.

Stan and I were friends, and duck hunting buddies for twenty-five years. I first met Stan at the Wimbee landing, where I am certain his spirit still jokes, and engages in good-hearted ribbing over missed opportunities.... And then maybe a little nip...Always a positive reflection, even when we only saw Mergansers....My sincere condolences to Jamie, and all of Stan's family. He was one of the TRUE GENTLEMEN it was my pleasure to have known.... Godspeed....... Dick McIntyre Lobeco, SC

Dear Sharon, Jamie and Family, I remember Stan very fondly. He was a terrific boss while I worked for him at SCN Bank in the Installment Loan Department many, many years ago. I will never forget his great devotion to The Citadel, Ducks Unlimited, Rotary, and I am sure many other wonderful organizations. I was so excited to informally meet Jamie who was on his dock a few months back while I was visiting my friends, the Schmidts, and told him how I was his dad's secretary way back when he was just a baby. I know Stan will be greatly missed and I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss.
