James Horner Obituary

James Franklin Horner CHARLESTON - Mr. James Franklin Horner, 91, husband of Mildred M. Horner, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. A native of Cherrydale, Virginia, he was the son of Thomas Franklin and Addie Johnson Horner. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Horner served in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters aboard the destroyer USS Bunch, serving as a Machinist's Mate 3rd Class. A dedicated civil servant, Mr. Horner worked in Naval Ordnance plants throughout the United States, and was most recently retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, having served a total of 38 years in civil service. As a young man, he served as a Volunteer Firefighter in Cherrydale, VA. An excellent woodworker, he spent his retirement years crafting furniture and other accessories for family and friends. Mr. Horner is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mildred Moore Horner; 2 Daughters, Linda Burchfield and husband Steven of Lawrenceville, GA, Louise Markham and husband Allan of Ridgeville, SC, 2 Stepdaughters, Kaye Heins and husband Erwin of N. Charleston, SC, and Donna Stith and husband Anthony of Mt. Pleasant, SC; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and his beloved canine companion, Matthew. In addition to his parents, Mr. Horner was preceded in death by his 3 sisters, Dulcie Potter, Vera O'Neill, and Marjorie Webber. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Horner are invited to attend the Memorial Service for the former at 11:00 AM Friday, February 15, 2013, from the chapel of the James A. McAlister Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, February 14, 2013, between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 PM. Interment will take place at a later date at Beaufort National Cemetery. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1540 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412, or to a charity of one's choice.
