James Herring Obituary

James Herring Beaufort, SC - James Walton Herring died March 4. He is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 63 years, 3 daughters and their husbands, Pamela (Bill) Amy (Chris), Holly (Michael), 5 granddaughters and 1 grandson, and his sister Margot Kuniholm. Born in Madrid, Spain to Marguerite and H. Walton Herring, raised in Chicago and New Canaan, CT, Jim attended Hotchkiss, Yale and Harvard Business School. He was a veteran. He met Phyllis in Boston with whom he led a creative life. He was a marketing innovator, invigorated by challenge. He worked at General Electric, Texize and ARCO. His unusual projects included: housing in Alaska, land developments and marketing concepts for the Roman Baths in England. He established the non-profit "Gifts-in-Kind Clearing House" in conjunction with Davidson College. Jim and Phyllis retired to Summerville and then Beaufort, SC, spending summers in Bath, England and the Isle of Procida, Italy. Jim was fun, humorous and non-conforming. He produced several plays, wrote childrens books and delighted in storytelling. He taught his own storywriting program to public school children and always encouraged young people to pursue education and to dream. In his late 80s he volunteered at the St. Helena's Treasure House, continuing his passion for discovering antiques and fundraising. He delighted in watching sunsets over the marsh from his garden. The family plans a private memorial. Memorials: McNerney Playwriting Award - a College of Charleston Foundation Fund established by Jim, or The Parish Church of St. Helena, Beaufort, SC. Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

There are individuals that seemingly in a random manner enter our lives, yet that forever alter them. I will never forget sitting in my office in about 2003, when Jim knocked at my door. His passion, his humor, and his energy were infectious.
To Phyllis and the rest of the family, you have my deepest sympathies and - while I am certain he might find a joke in it - my prayers. God bless all of you.

I will always remember my forever buddy. He was full of life till the end. He never gave up. He had such passion for plays and poetry; wish I could have bottled that up in a jar. I knew he was physically tired, but his spirit wasn't. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I'll miss not sharing my chocolate with Mr. Herring the greatest actor of all times.

In loving memory of the most unique father-in-law anybody could have. An annual lobster dinner with a side of bacon to remember your quirky, fun, and optimistic approach to life will become a tradition for us, I'm sure. You'll be missed!
