James Harley Obituary

James Melvin Harley CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of September 11, 2009, James Melvin Harley of Charleston, South Carolina. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service this Sunday afternoon at three o'clock in the Church of the Good Shepard, 1393 Miles Drive, Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall Sunday from two o'clock until time of service. Burial services will be conducted later in Beaufort National Cemetery. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. James was born October 15, 1921 in Savannah, Georgia, son of the late James M. Harley and Mary Worthington Harley. He attended schools in Barnwell, SC, Baltimore, MD and Charleston, SC. The only school he ever talked about was the High School of Charleston, whose motto engraved above the entrance was, "Enter to Learn and Leave to Serve". He would joke about always just serving. He served his country in World War II while a member of the Army Air Corps. He took part in driving the enemy out of North Africa, moving through Moroco, Algeria and Tunisia and then on to Sicily, where he departed on rotation to return home. After leaving the service, he worked in Baltimore for a few years driving buses and trolly cars. With the aid of government on-the-job training, he started a career as a printer and linotype operator in Darlington, SC and continued on to work at one of the oldest printing establishments in the country. After a few years with Walker, Evans and Cogswell on Broad Street, he went on to the Charleston newspaper publishing firm of "The News and Courier", where he retired after 30 years. James was a Mason and also a member of the V.F.W. He was a faithful member of St. Peter and St. John Episcopal church, and served on the vestry. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy. They were married 60 wonderful years before the angels took her away March 30, 2002. His son, Richard passed away on November 10, 2003. Surviving are three daughters, Charlene Smith and husband, Ray of Charleston, SC; Marilyn Irick and husband, Zack of Atlanta, GA; and Brenda Lockey of Charleston, SC; a son, David Harley and wife, Joanne of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, Inc., 3870 Leeds Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405. The Harley family,

When I think of Uncle Jimmy, I think of Footprints in the Sand.

Eternal Lord God,you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth you light and your peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served you here and are now at rest, may at last enter with them into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
