James Grant Obituary

James Kirkland Grant FOLLY BEACH - James Kirkland Grant (Feb 14th, 1943 - May 5th, 2023) James Kirkland Grant, known by his friends as "Kirk", a distinguished legal professional and academic, passed away on May 5th, 2023. Born in Monroe, Michigan, Kirk embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the field of law and inspiring countless individuals along the way. Kirk's academic pursuits led him to the University of Michigan, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1965. He continued his educational journey at the University of Michigan Law School, graduating in 1968. Kirk's thirst for knowledge throughout his career took him to esteemed institutions such as Columbia University Law School and Harvard, where he served as a visiting scholar. As a passionate educator, Kirk began his teaching career at Georgia State University in Atlanta, imparting his expertise in Business Law for two years. He later joined the University of Toledo Law School, where he held the positions of Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean. After a successful stint in New York City, practicing law with a Wall Street firm, Kirk returned to academia, becoming a revered professor at the University of South Carolina Law School. During this time, he purchased his beloved house at Folly Beach in 1978. In 1980, Kirk assumed the role of Dean at the University of Delaware Law School, making a lasting impact until 1983. His thirst for knowledge drew him to Harvard once again, where he spent time as a Visiting Scholar before reentering the legal profession in Boston, Massachusetts. Kirk's dedication to legal education was further manifested during his tenure at Touro Law School on Long Island, New York. Where for 23 years, he served as a full professor, before moving to the Charleston School of Law in 2005. He served as a full professor there until 2015. Retiring from full-time teaching in 2015, Kirk continued to provide legal consultation. He served on Arbitration panels for prestigious institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange, the National Association of Securities Dealers, and the American Arbitrator Association, utilizing his expertise to resolve complex disputes. Additionally, Kirk was appointed as a Special Master by Federal and State Courts, demonstrating his exceptional skills in impartiality and judgment. His astuteness and insights also led him to be qualified as an expert witness in several business litigations. Kirk's commitment to community service extended to his involvement on local charity boards, where he actively worked to improve the lives of those less fortunate. He served as the Chairman of the Board of C4, the Charleston coalition for eliminating cruise ships from docking downtown, showcasing his dedication to creating positive change in the community. Kirk was also the founding Faculty Advisor for the Alliance for Equality at the Charleston School of Law, passionately championing inclusivity and equality in the legal profession. Recognized for his achievements, Kirk was a member of esteemed organizations such as the American Law Institute Inns of Court and the James L. Petigru Inn of Court. His memberships reflected his commitment to fostering professional excellence, camaraderie, and the pursuit of justice. Though Kirk's professional accomplishments were numerous, his true joy was in his personal life. Kirk was a loving and devoted father to his daughter, Alexandra. He cherished their bond and was immensely proud of her achievements. Throughout his life, Kirk valued the importance of friendship and cultivated meaningful long-term relationships. His warmth, wit, and generosity endeared him to many, and he was known for his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Kirk had a deep love for literature, finding inspiration within the pages of biographies, history books, and historical novels. He also enjoyed collecting coins and antique items, a hobby that brought him joy over the years. Traveling was one of Kirk's passions, as he ventured to various places around the world, immersing himself in different cultures and broadening his horizons. Kirk was a member of Grace Church Cathedral. He was a long-time lover of animals, most notably his adored Tootsie, Henry, and Bojo. His toy poodle, Jack, brought him joy and companionship throughout the last few years. Kirk's altruistic nature shone through his commitment to providing legal assistance to those in need. His unwavering support for the underprivileged was evident in his volunteer work and involvement with local charities. Kirk passed peacefully at his beloved home on Folly, "The Fort", with his family around him. His passing leaves a void in the legal community and the lives of those who knew him. His contributions as a legal scholar, educator, arbitrator, volunteer, compassionate friend, and devoted father will be remembered fondly. May his memory live on as an inspiration to all who strive for excellence, justice, kindness, meaningful connections, and a life well-lived in the world. A celebration of Kirk Grant's life will be held at Bishop Gadsden Chapel, located at 5 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC, on June 10th at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. Kirk was a professor during law school. We became good friends. I was deeply saddened learning of his death. Last time I saw him was about four years ago in Charleston. We had a nice time reminiscing about the good old law school days. RIP my friend. I hope we meet again.

Kirk was my Contracts Law Professor @ Touro Law School in Huntington, NY in the 1980's. Not one student wasn't afraid of getting called on by him to answer a complex contracts question. It was a healthy fear, one borne in respect for his no-nonsense approach to learning. He ended up being my favorite professor there. He gave me the highest "A" that semester. I ended up loving contracts & deeply understanding them because of his patience & vast knowledge. I am saddened to learn of his passing, but feel the need to memorialize just what a wonderful teacher he was. He will be sorely missed.

I had the pleasure of being assigned to work for Kirk at BD&G in Boston. He was such a refreshing and entertaining man. He made the average day such fun. Kirk was assigned the job of organizing a lunch for summer associates. Instead of a stuffy office setting - he had me order at least 30 boxed lunches and we marched off to the Boston common on a beautiful sunny day! He went to a different wonderful drum. Most memorable is the day I won a day of sailing for 6 out of Boston. He was my first pick to offer to share the trip with. After the trip just the two of us toured around the beautiful town of Marblehead, ma. I was working for him the day he went for a walk before the day started with his golden retriever. The dog was struck by a car and killed. Kirk called me and said he´d be late. I was heartbroken for him when he finally arrived. I knew how much that dog meant to him as his foyer held a larger painting of him as you entered his home along the Charles. I could go on and on. I kept in touch with him after he left Boston. My husband and I were happy to be included in the christening of his daughter at the Harvard club in ny. Such an interesting day. Kirk invited me to his home in folly hill numerous times. Every now and then as one goes through life they are blessed enough to have certain people introduced to them. Kirk was one of them for me. I will miss his annual Christmas letter. It was so much fun to read about his travels around the world. Rip kirk - you made the world a better place. Kathy Neville

Alex,

I´ve never seen a man love his daughter more than your father loved you. How lucky he was to call you his. May you carry with you the memories you made with one another, the adventures you shared, and all of the wonderful parts of him that live on through you every day.

To the Family of Dean J. Kirkland Grant, J.D.:
I was a mid-law student at Delaware Law School 40-something years ago, when I met Dean Grant and 'Henry,' his Irish-setter, in fact, for the next 2 years, Kirk often asked me to serve as his 'sitter' when he was out-of-town because 'Henry' was a social-animal. Kirk had a wonderful sense of humor, a very facile-mind, especially in legal-matters/-studies, and a genuine-classiness that was patently obvious to even the most-casual observer. I can think of no situation in which he would not have been completely at-ease. He knew many things, had many friends, traveled nearly everywhere and shared his love-of-Life with many others. On Mother's Day, from 2018 to 2022, he and his brother, Gordon, telephoned my mother (1924-2022), at my request, to wish her a Happy Mother's Day. Dean Grant was always a true and loyal friend to me and I shall miss him.

Dear Alexandra, We are so saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved father. He was truly a great man, accomplished, caring, sensitive & loyal in all things he pursued. Moving to Hasell Street arou,nd the corner from Wentworth, we instantly bonded as close friends & formed a lasting friendship. Whether we were at each others homes for dinners, holiday, backyard parties we always included each other in mutual events. Your dad Kirk was always first in our quest list & he will truly be missed. We also had many good times @ the Fort & enjoyed his visits to our summer home in Newport, RI & all of our friends immediatly enjoyed his company. His friends in Newport were deeply saddened by his passing. We will be thinking of you on June 10th & will be there in spirit from Newport. We are lighting a candle @ St. Johns Episcopal Church in NPT for the repose of his soul. Stay strong during this difficult time. Love, Dan & Jamie Vara

I wish we could reject Kirk's death because he leaves behind so many people who loved him and his company. I like that the obituary after listing his numerous professional accomplishments stated "his true joy was in his personal life." That's what matters in the end and he passed on that joy to so many friends and acquaintances who while missing him are grateful for having had the great pleasure of encountering him.

I am stunned to see this obituary for my long time friend who introduced my partner and myself to the wonders of the Lowcountry, in general, and Folly Beach in particular back in 1988 as we contemplated a move to this area. I will be forever grateful to have encountered this extraordinary man at a critical moment in my life and feel the welcoming warmth of his personality. Sincere love to Alexandra as she negotiates the turmoil of these days.
