James Glenn CHARLESTON - James Caroll "Jimmy" Glenn, 85, of Charleston and Greenwood, died Saturday, May 11, at his home. Jimmy was born on March 22, 1939, in Greenwood, South Carolina, the son of Woodrow Miller Glenn and Clara Bell (Johnson) Glenn. After losing his hearing at the age of six because of a childhood illness, Jimmy graduated in 1958 from the South Carolina School for the Deaf. He then studied printing at a technical school in Florida and returned home to begin his newspaper career. He first worked at the People-Sentinel in Barnwell, then moved on to Greenville at the Baptist Courier. In 1963, Jimmy came to Charleston to work at the Post & Courier where he retired after 38 years. He was inducted into the newspaper's Quarter Century Club in 1994. Jimmy was a member of the Citadel Square Baptist Church where he was active in the deaf ministry. He was a member of the South Carolina Association of the Deaf, a member of the South Carolina School for the Deaf Alumni Association and former president of the Low Country Association of the Deaf (LCAD). Despite his hearing loss at a young age, Jimmy never let it prevent him from having an active and rewarding life. His love of sports began at an early age. As a boy, he became interested in golf and that continued through adulthood. Jimmy was a member of the South Carolina Deaf Golf Association, playing on the team from Charleston. Jimmy loved football and basketball, playing both sports in high school. He was inducted into his schools Hall of Fame in 2002. As a senior, he gained national recognition in both sports. He was an honorable mention selection on a national football team and a first All-Southeastern tournament pick. His coach praised him as "the most outstanding athlete I've coached in my time at Cedar Spring." He also enjoyed photography, fishing, drawing, camping and watching Clemson football. He was very fond of doing genealogy research and was a member of the Pilgrim Edward Doty Society. Jimmy was the doting grandfather of three girls who adored their "Jimmy-James." Jimmy Glenn is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Kathryn Durst-Glenn; daughter, Maude Hayden Hoose (Fred); Son, Jonathan Daniel Durst-Glenn; granddaughters: Rachel Evelyn Hoose, Sarah Glenn Hoose, Rebecca Lynch Hoose; sisters-in-law, Karolyn Durst Talbert (Robert), Dianne Durst; nieces, Emily Talbert Peyton, and Kathleen Talbert Arnold. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Doris J. Glenn. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 in Citadel Square Baptist Church on Friday, May 24, 2024, with the Reverend Ken Hardin officiating. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.
