James Culclasure Obituary

James "Jimmy" Culclasure Edisto Island - Dr. James "Jimmy" Wise Culclasure, 82, of Edisto Island, South Carolina, died on June 22, 2021, in Greenville, South Carolina. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 10:30 am at Saint Paul United Methodist Church located at 1808 Bridge Street, Saint Matthews, South Carolina 29135. Jimmy was born on March 7, 1939, and was preceded in death by his parents, Rawl Dargan Culclasure and Sue Wise Culclasure; and his brothers, Rawl "Beezie" Dargan Culclasure, Jr., and Talley Felder Culclasure. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Riley Culclasure. Also surviving are his sister, Susan Culclasure Parker of Columbia, South Carolina, and his three children: Julia "Julie" Dargan Weiskopf (Bill), of Midlothian, Virginia; Margaret "Meg" Culclasure O'Brien (Greg), of Davidson, North Carolina; and James "Jay" Wise Culclasure, Jr. (Brooke), of Greenville, South Carolina. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Paige Weiskopf Yuhase (Billy), William "Trey" Joseph Weiskopf III (Chelsea), Cade Dargan Weiskopf, Margaret "Maggie" Tilley O'Brien, James "Jimmy" Wise Culclasure III, Douglas Taylor Culclasure, Charles Oliver O'Brien, Elizabeth Dargan Culclasure, Chandler Gray Yuhase, and Dargan Blume Yuhase. Jimmy grew up among close family members and dear friends in St. Matthews, South Carolina, where he was a star player on the St. Matthews High School football team and active in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was a 1961 graduate of Clemson University and remained a lifelong Tiger fan. After Clemson, he went on to attend the Dental College of the Medical College of Virginia, where he received his degree in 1965. Jimmy practiced general dentistry in Manning, South Carolina, for several years following his graduation from dental school and went on to complete his endodontics fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Following his time in Pittsburgh, he practiced endodontics in Columbia, South Carolina, and in Lynchburg, Virginia, before returning to his beloved state of South Carolina in 2001 to retire on Edisto Island. As a resident of Edisto Beach, Jimmy served on the Edisto Beach Planning Commission and on the Edisto Beach Town Council, assisted as a volunteer firefighter, and was an active member of the Edisto Island United Methodist Church. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, being a member of the Lions Club, cooking, playing cards and golf, and spending time with family and friends at the Edisto Beach Yacht Club. Jimmy was a smart and good doctor, a loyal friend, a funny person, and a dedicated servant of God. He loved animals and helping others with simple acts of kindness like mowing grass for those who were unable and providing food for those who were ill. He made the best steak, ribs, and grits anyone ever tasted and enjoyed cooking large dinners for his family and friends. His favorite holiday activity was dyeing Easter eggs with his grandchildren and he was known to be able to correct the grammar of even the staunchest grammar expert. He loved 70s music and was the best dance partner one could hope to have. With his big smile and his infectious laugh, everyone who met Jimmy loved him. The family wishes to thank all who have been supportive of Jimmy, particularly the caregivers at the memory care wing of Waterstone on Augusta in Greenville, South Carolina, at Interim Hospice in Greenville, South Carolina, and at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia. They are also grateful for the kind and loving care given to Jimmy by his home health caregivers, Beka Vincent and Ann Seay. Anyone wishing to make a contribution is asked to consider a gift to the Edisto Island United Methodist Church Building Fund (8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, SC 29438) or Saint Paul United Methodist Church (1808 Bridge Street, Saint Matthews, South Carolina 29135).
