James Coleman Obituary

COLEMAN, Walker III James Walker Coleman III died Monday, July 14, 2008. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in St. Michael's Episcopal Church with interment at Magnolia Cemetery. After the ceremony, the family will receive friends and relatives at 3 Cochran Court. Mr. Coleman was born February 8, 1942, the son of Margot Hamilton Coleman, now deceased, and James Walker Coleman Jr. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Saint Cecelia Society, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Society of Colonial Wars, Society of the War of 1812, the Charleston Club, and the St. Andrew's Society, and an ardent supporter of the Mystic Knights of the Mau-Mau, a cultural organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the rich history of American roots music, among a plethora of other musical interests. He graduated from Charleston High School (1960), the University of Southern Mississippi (1966) and the University of Georgia Business School (1967). For more than forty years, he was a devoted employee of the Medical University of South Carolina, serving four presidents and guiding the university through some of its most challenging periods. He was instrumental in the founding of the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund established by the South Carolina Legislature in 2000, and served as administrator from its inception. A steadfastly loyal and caring friend, brother, husband and father, Walker possessed the uncanny ability to remember and recount an endless array of meaningful stories infused with a unique sense of nostalgia, imagination and humor. His rich character, reassuring countenance and irrefutable selflessness, along with the breadth and depth of his musical appreciation, will forever be sorely missed yet fondly remembered. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debby Larkin Coleman of Charleston, SC; his father of Charleston, SC; two sons, James Walker Coleman IV and his wife Heather Koval Coleman of Mount Pleasant, and Chisolm Larkin Coleman and his wife Margaret DeBerry Coleman, of Mount Pleasant; three brothers, Heyward Hamilton Coleman of Charleston, Alexander Chisolm Coleman of Orangeburg, SC, and James Thomas Coleman of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Elizabeth Chisolm Coleman and Katherine Prioleau Chisolm Coleman, both of Charleston; and two grandchildren, Logan Wulbern Coleman and Walker Hamilton Coleman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 14 St. Michael's Alley, Charleston, SC 29401; Orangeburg County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, For the Woodland's Residence, P.O. My fondest memory of Walker comes from a trip to Martha's Vineyard on my 16th birthday. With his family in-tow, we ventured forth for a day of biking on the island. The beach called and we answered, only to find that the call was a "clothing optional" one. Walker's only comment to me was, "I hope like hell your father doesn't find out about this!" Debby, Walker and Chisolm, I am so glad I knew this wonderful man. Your lives, and mine, are all the richer for it.

Love to you all -

Heyward and I are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend, Walker. He was instumental in igniting our interest in early rock and roll and was himself a veritable encyclopedia of the genre. His erudite reviews and witty comments about each Ponderosa Stomp performance were so remarkable that they should be collected and pulished.
He was a very fine southern gentleman, much admired by everyone who knew him.

I only had the privilege of knowing Walker Coleman for several years but recognized instantly what an outstanding human being he was - raconteur extraordinaire, a gentle man who was extremely generous of spirit, the kind of husband, father, brother and uncle every person in the world would love to have. My heart goes out to Debby and his family and I pray for strength for them to face life without his beloved presence.
