James Brown Obituary

James E. Brown CHARLESTON - James E. Brown, aectionately known as "Downtown Jimmy Brown," passed away on December 3, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of artistry, charm, and an enduring love for the Lowcountry. Born and raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Jimmy lived a life as colorful as his celebrated artwork and as vibrant as the shag dance oors where he was a beloved gure in the Charleston area. Jimmy was born on December 1, 1943 to Mallon Eugene Brown and Geraldine M. Brown, both of whom preceded him in death. His reputation as a ladies' man began during his time at Moultrie High School and remained a part of his charm throughout his life. As a young man, he was an exceptional athlete, excelling in track, basketball, and football, and went on to attend the University of South Carolina before proudly serving in the National Guard as a helicopter pilot. After his military service, Jimmy took to the skies as a private commercial pilot, a career that complemented his adventurous spirit. When grounded, he turned his passion to art, creating captivating Lowcountry pieces that reected the beauty of the region he loved so dearly. His art earned him admiration across the Charleston area, but it was his lively presence and unmistakable charisma that made him a community treasure. He was especially known for his skill on the shag dance oors, where he brought joy to countless gatherings. Jimmy is survived by his true love, Janice Lever. He is also survived by his niece, Kim Freeman, and nephews, Gary Rhode and Todd Rhode. During this time, an angel named Michelle Sessions was a blessing to Jimmy, family and friends. Services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of owers, donations may be made to MUSC Children's Hospital in "Downtown" Jimmy Brown's name. Jimmy will forever be remembered for his vibrant personality, artistic talent, and the love he shared with all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing and his spirit continue to inspire.
