James Brown CHARLESTON - James Brown, born September 25, 1950, to the late Mr. Benjamin Brown, Sr. of Green Pond, SC, and Justine Doctor Brown Green of Red Top, SC, departed this life on January 11, 2023. James was united in Holy Matrimony in 1986 to Ms. Marlene Sutton of Charleston, SC . Mr. Brown attended Simonton Elementary and graduated from Burke High School, Charleston, SC, in 1969. He was employed by General Electric and later owned his own business as a Refrigerator Repair Technician and a Handy-Man. Mr. Brown was predeceased by his parents, his daughter, Semaj Brown; brothers, Aaron Brown, Joseph Brown and Benjamin Brown, Jr.; sisters, Eloise B. Washington and Diane B. Curry. James is survived by his daughters, Sharra Sutton, Summerville, SC, Shuan Sutton, Charleston, SC, and Nadia Johnson, North Charleston, SC; son, Jay Sutton, North Charleston, SC; grandson, Lavon Drayton Summerville, SC; brothers, George I. Brown (Barbara) of Beaufort, SC, Rev. John Paul Brown (Viola) of Charleston, SC; sisters, Essie Murray (Rev. Franklin) of Roxbury, MA, Harriett L. Jackson Rashullah (Hameen) of NY and Justine Cartwright (Carl) of New Kent, VA. He also leaves to mourn, his brothers-in-law, Lester Curry, St. Petersburg, Florida and Wendell Washington, North Charleston, SC; aunts; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. The relatives and friends of Mr. James Brown will celebrate his life on Wednesday January 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM in Emanuel AME Church, 1057 5th Ave., Charleston, SC 29407.
