James Meyer Obituary

SIDNEY - James Richard Meyer, age 88, of Sidney, went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2021. James was born on May 16, 1933 to the late Paul H. and Martha Ellen (Francis) Meyer in Sidney, Ohio.

James married Dorothy F. (Albers) Meyer on November 7, 1956 at St. Josephs Church, Egypt, Ohio. They were married 64 years, to be 65 years in November.

James was survived by son, Steve (Layne) Meyer of Sidney, three daughters, Sue (Jim) Longbrake of DeGraff, Mary Jo (Dave) McClain of Sidney, Jane Ely of Columbus, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, soon to be thirteen.

Also surviving are sister, Joan Finkenbine of Anna, brother, Bill (Pam) Meyer of Sidney, sister-in-laws; Carol Meyer, Fritz Albers, Norma Gill, Rosie (Dave) Cooper, Diana (Bob) Wyen, Betty (Gerald) Kempfer, Margaret (Tim) Simon, and many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by brothers, Pete and (Ruth) Meyer, David Meyer, and brother-in-law Tom Finkenbine, in-laws; Rita and Henry Seger, Eileen and Urban Meyer, Donald Albers, Junior and Cecelia Albers, Martha and Elmer Walters, Gene Gill and Bobby Albers also preceded him in death.

James graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1952 and then entered the Navy. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea and the F.D. Roosevelt aircraft carriers from 1952 – 1956. He was a member of the American Legion Post 217 and VFW Post 4239 in Sidney. James retired after 37 years from DP & L. He spent his time there as a Lineman and later as a Supervisor. James and Dorothy enjoyed camping, following the grandchildren's and great grandchildren's sports activities and other activities. After retirement, James and Dorothy enjoyed spending winters in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 1401 Fair Rd., Sidney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2021at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Andrew Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery with full military honors performed by the Shelby County Veterans and the U.S. Navy.

In lieu of flowers, donations to be made to the Kettering Grandview Foundation Nurse Development fund to honor the extraordinary, most compassionate care our family received from ICU Nurse Rufus and 4 West nurses, Samantha and Jean. The address is 405 Grand Street, Dayton, OH 45405.
