James Bradley Obituary

James Donald Bradley Charleston - James Donald Bradley, 91, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Violet "Vi" N. Bradley, entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 9, 2021. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 1605 Harbor View Road at 10:00 a.m. Masks and social distancing will be required. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Jim was born April 9, 1930 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, where he spent his childhood along with his sister, Hazel and his parents, J.B. and Viola Bradley in Fort Mill, SC. Jim enjoyed all sports. One athletic endeavor earned him the moniker of "Whirlwind Bradley" in the local paper and a subsequent one off boxing match. Jim earned his Bachelor's Degree from Clemson University in 1954. Spending a season on the football team cemented him as a life-long Clemson fan. Go Tigers!!! Jim's career in the Air Force was curtailed after a plane accident and put his Clemson degree to use as Vice President with Bancroft and Son in Wilmington, Delaware. His desire to have his own business lead to his return to South Carolina and the establishment of the Hess Station on James Island. Jim enjoyed his station and employees and clients from 1971 until his retirement, turning the business over to his son, J.B. Jim will be united with his devoted wife, Violet "Vi" of 65 years. They were committed partners in bowling, golfing, tennis, Clemson football games and Bridge, achieving life masters. He leaves behind his daughter, Deborah B. Mather (Tom); son, James D. Bradley II (Trisha); eight grandchildren: Francis C. Wham, Jr. (Briana), Andrew R. Mather (Hannah), Wesley A. Mather (Gina), Layne A. Mather, Airel Howcroft (Alex), Mandie Long (Daniel), Christopher Bradley (Meredith) and Jimmy Bradley; and two great-grandchildren: Corbin and Vivian Howcroft. We would like to thank friends and family including: Indigo Hall and supporting staff, Crest Hospice, East Cooper ER, South State Bank, Merrill Lynch, Senior Helps, P.F. Chang's, and many others. Thank you all for the extra support during this journey. A very special thank you to Dr. Kleckley and Dr. Mary Hart Bryan and the hard working staff members that loved Jim through all the years at Franke at Seaside. Memorials may be made to the Clemson Alumni Association, 109 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29631. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Knew Jim and Vi very well years ago. We were in church together, on committees together, and in Sunday School classes together. Wonderful couple and miss them. RIP

As a volunteer at the Franke Home, Mr. Bradley was one of my favorites to take on wheelchair strolls around the property. I enjoyed talking to him about Clemson football, tailgating, his being a pilot, memories of his beloved Vi, P.F. Chang lunches brought to him by his daughter, how he was going to buy himself a car and his love of Peanut MnM's! He was a joy to spend time with and ever appreciative of the beauty surrounding him! I will greatly miss him! Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers!

JB, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. I have many fond memories of growing up on James Island and your dad and the "Hess station " and all of our friends he employed were part of them. My deepest sympathy.
