Jim Barnhill was one of the most courageous people I have ever known. He lived his faith and loved his family and friends. We will miss him.

I’m sorry for this news. I always enjoyed Col. Barnhill, especially his grousing over the price of good Scotch when we all lived on Riggs Drive (if it came from his liquor cabinet). As I recall, he never bought any good Scotch however, only "cheap stuff". Any good Scotch at the Barnhill’s home was likely a gift from someone else – I base this on their own comments, my careful observations and strong suspicions (;-)).
Along with my own father, (also Col. Cyril Shuler) Col. Barnhill was one of my most respected early mentors. Col. and Sis Barnhill were also very very important to my son when we all lived as neighbors on Riggs Drive and he greatly preferred them to his maternal grandparents (me too (;-))
It’s ironic (to me anyway) that Col. Barnhill passed on July 7, 2008 which is the 31st anniversary of a memorable party we threw across the street from the Barnhill’s at 105 Riggs Drive, for one of Bette Shuler’s visits to our hometown (that time I do recall it was most definitely ALL MY GOOD SCOTCH (;-)). The memorial service for Col. Barnhill on July 13, 2008 is also the anniversary of my own fathers passing. So, like 7/7/77 July 13th. is another special day in my life and memories.
Jim Barnhill, Sr. was a fine Charleston gentleman all his life; at least the part of it which was my great pleasure to share with him and his family. I’ll miss him, but know Col. Barnhill joins my son, father & mother as well Col. Cyril Shuler in each others good company; however I doubt my former father in-law likely will be in Col. Barnhill’s neighborhood this time ...
Warmly,
Martin McKenzie
