Isaiah Crosby Obituary

Isaiah Crosby WALTERBORO - Mr. Isaiah Crosby, 86, of Walterboro, entered into rest Tuesday afternoon, April 29, 2025, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. Born September 7, 1938 in Round O, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Vernon Crosby, Sr. and the late Mamie Lou Colson Crosby Smoak. He was raised by his mother and step-father, the late Mouzon Smoak. Following his graduation from Cottageville High School, he furthered his education at the Landscape Institute of California. He started working in 1955 as a manager for Wildwood Landscape Contractors. He worked faithfully under his friend and mentor, the late Mr. Robert Marvin before eventually purchasing the landscape construction division of the company in 1976. In his sixty years of operation, he completed many distinguished projects. He received five national landscape awards for work completed at the College of Charleston, Henry C. Chambers Park (Beaufort), Harbor Town (Hilton Head), Citizens and Southern National Bank of South Carolina (Charleston), and Farmers and Merchants Bank (Walterboro). These awards were presented to him at the White House by the First Ladies of the United States Presidency. Isaiah had a strong devotion to his family and created a lasting legacy. He eventually transitioned the business to his son, Jerry, and today the company is currently operated by his two grandsons, Cole and Ryan, at the same location on Hampton Street in Walterboro. As a private pilot, he dearly enjoyed flying and served as a Commissioner of Walterboro Airport. He was a member of the Walterboro Jaycees, as well as the First Baptist Church of Walterboro. He served as President of the Parent Teacher Association of John C. Calhoun Academy in Walterboro, which is known today as Colleton Preparatory Academy. He was also an avid supporter of the former Walterboro Wildcats and played a fundamental role in the building of the former Football Stadium on Black Street. Racing cars, boats, and horses were his greatest pastimes and held a great part of his heart. Isaiah was a man of strong determination and devotion. One of his iconic quotes in life was that he had the same job, same wife, and same house for nearly seventy years. Surviving are: his wife, the light and love of his life for sixty-nine years, Mrs. Annie Ruth Bailey Crosby; a daughter, Ann Crosby Knight; six grandchildren, Jennifer Mixson Bishop (Scott), Colby William "Cole" Crosby (Lanie), Michael Logan Woolard, Ryan Martin Crosby (Katie), Charles Isaiah "Tre;" Ricketson, and Dondi LaRyn Crosby; a step-grandchild, Nicole Woolard; four great-grandchildren, Bryson, Colby, Spencer, and Rylan; and one step-great- grandchild, Reagan; as well as a son-in-law, Mike A. Woolard; and a daughter-in-law; Donna Alderman Crosby. He was preceded in death by two children, Cathy Crosby Mixson Woolard and William Jerry Crosby; four brothers, Vernon Crosby, Jr., J. M. Smoak, Jackie Smoak, and Reggie Smoak; and a son-in-law, Daniel Mixson. The family is extremely grateful to his devoted caregivers and dear family friends who provided support during times of need. Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to the charity of one's choice. The Relatives and Friends of Mr. Isaiah Crosby are invited to attend his funeral service, which will be conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2025, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The service will be officiated by The Reverend Gordon Ackerman and Mr. Aaron Mixson. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, WALTERBORO CHAPEL, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843.538.5408. Visit the registry online at: www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
