Isadore Million Obituary

Isadore "Izzy" Million passed away in Boulder at the age of 86 on Thursday March 20th, 2014. He passed peacefully and quietly, surrounded by family and friends. Isadore was born on June 11, 1927 in Detroit, MI to Rachael and Simon Million. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII from 1945 to 1947 and was stationed in occupied Germany. After the War, he returned to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan on the GI Bill where he found one of his great loves: geology. Throughout his life he was an avid and introspective reader. He loved history and science and was a Civil War buff. After completing his degree, he moved to the West where he became an Exploration Geologist. While working for the Atomic Energy Commission in the uranium fields near Green River, Utah he met his other great love: Bonnie. They were married in 1956 and had five children together. His work in geology took him all over the world, including Alaska, Mexico, England, Indonesia, Australia and Venezuela. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed his time exploring for mineral deposits in remote areas. But of all the places his geology took him, it was the Western United States that inspired him the most. During the 1950's and '60's, the West was still rough and simple. Isadore ventured to remote areas, drove every dirt road and was familiar with every small town. He was tough, adventurous and he could handle any environment. He enjoyed camping outside under the stars and finding the occasional scorpion in his boots. He was a romantic at heart. In 1971, Isadore, along with his family, moved to Boulder to take a job as Chief Geologist for a fluorspar mine in Jamestown, Colorado. They have remained here since. Isadore helped construct the wing of Har Hashem Synagogue where he and his wife were early members. He taught temporarily at the School of Mines, as well as being a member of various geological organizations and societies. In 1981, Isadore and Bonnie started Penny Lane Coffee Shop on Pearl Street, which remained open till 2005. Isadore and Penny Lane quickly became Boulder icons. Isadore had a wonderful ability to accept others from all walks of life. He was always willing to reach out to people with his generosity, helpfulness and kindness. He was a positive and guiding influence for many, many people. He has friends from all over the world. Isadore is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, their five children: Moe, Gilbert, Aaron, Elizabeth and Rebekah. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren: Simon, Rachael, Brittany, Jordan, Adam, Sara, Emily, Avery, Natanel and Elinor and by his brothers Peter and Abe, sister Sara and sister-in-law Jean. He will be missed by many. There will be a memorial service at Congregation Har Hashem (3950 Baseline Rd, Boulder, CO 80303) on Sunday, March 23rd at 10:30am. The burial will immediately follow and will take place at Green Mountain Cemetery.

I just heard the news my old friend. I knew I would hear it at some point and wondered when. I've imagined so many conversations with you after we last spoke in person, remembering all those times camping and wandering around Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, talking geology, politics, literature, and whatever else came up with Shadow in the back seat. We did it well. Remember when I ran out of gas on I80 outside of Utah and you hitched us a ride on a semi by putting your thumb out and pulling up the leg of your trousers. We didn't wait for long. Say hello to my dear Shadow for me. I hope you can feel the sadness in my heart. Peace my friend.

Only just heard the news today.
A wise and excellent companion that I met pre-Penny Lane while scrambling in the hills looking for rock samples back in the 70's. Ironically, I was just relating a funny story a couple days ago to my daughter's Girl Scout Troop that involved Izzy and a rattlesnake down near Tubac (AZ). You're STILL bringing joy to the world! To be sure, Izzy, you have touched many and influenced many more. We all are so very lucky to have met you (whether for days or decades).
Miss ya, kid!

Isadore, you took me under your wing as a student geologist in 1973. I drove with you and your family from Boulder to Mexico that summer. You mischiefly introduced me to my first jalapeno pepper at a cafe in Juarez, to sardines in mustard on saltines in the desert and you taught me what field geology was really all about. I have thought of you often over the past 40 years and am grateful that fate brought me to this obituary so that I could offer a final thanks. My condolences to Bonnie and your family.

My dear friend,
I am so grateful that we connected when we did, Boulder was a wonderful town then and a great place to do business. You were the first business owner I met when I opened and you were so kind and supportive and a great neighbor. I still laugh when I think of all those crazy times, Isadore. You will always be the part of Boulder I love the best. You helped make Heaven II what it became and I am eternally thankful. See you in the Cosmos, my friend.

Thanks for creating such an open and creative venue for an entire generation of vagabonds, musicians, artists and poets. Many of the bonds I made at Penny Lane are still solid and I expect will hold a whole lifetime through. Thanks, Isadore.

This photo is surreal to me. He is sitting at our favorite table and looks as he always did during those fine days, as if a photo was plucked from my memories. The closing of Penny Lane was the last gasp of "Old Boulder" as the yuppies took over. It was a place of freaks, geeks and the occasional transvestite. A place of artists, musicians and poets. One would never guess that the 'Captain' of the good ship Penny Lane was this old Jewish Geologist. His presence, is his shorts and straw hat, was a comforting juxtaposition. I remember when he was first pointed out as the owner of this favorite haunt, I thought to myself "how odd?", "how perfect"....

We were pals, spending many afternoons drinking coffee together Penny Lane. How I miss those afternoon visits. One time ,along with my 16 year old daughter, we all piled in my truck to go explore a cave we had discovered on a 4x4 trail. I learned more from him than I could have ever remembered. He was deeply respected advisor during those early days in Boulder and always he admired our bikes as we rumbled in. Thank you Isidore for your generosity, compassion and wisdom ...RIP Brother
