Irving Stokes MT. PLEASANT - Irving Stokes, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Saturday July 28 2012. The relatives and friends of Irving Stokes are invited to visit with the family on Friday August 3, 2012 from 10 to 11 a.m. at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, located at 1494 Mathis Ferry Road Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A Memorial Service will take place in Mount Pleasant Chapel at 11 a.m., followed by the interment with military honors at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Irving was born on September 30, 1920 in Mt. Pleasant, SC, son of the late Lawrence Stokes and the late Marie Johnson, and was married to the late Rebecca Boston-Stokes. Irving was a WWII US Army veteran and retired as an Electrical Engineer for Grumman's Corporation on Long Island, NY. After retiring, in 1980 he returned to his home in Mt. Pleasant, where he worked as a part time supervisor for the Charleston County School District, Department of Custodial Service until 2006. He joined the Jehovah Witnesses Organization in July of 1976 and was a devoted brother. Mr. Stokes is survived by his wife, Loretta Pinckney-Stokes, of Mt. Pleasant SC, his daughters, Thomasena Stokes-Marshall of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Rosalee Godfrey of Philadelphia, PA; his son, Irving Stokes Jr. of Manhattan, NY; brothers, William and Henry Stokes of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Nephew, Rev. Robert Stokes of Mt. Pleasant SC, Sister-in-law, Christine Robinson of Queens, NY, 4 Granddaughters, 6 great granddaughters, 4 grandsons, 9 great-grandsons, 3 great-great-grandsons and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends Irving Stokes was preceded in death by son Anthony Stokes of Syracuse, NY, sister, Virginia Edwards, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; granddaughter Deaidra M. Bailey of Richmond VA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Senior Booster Club/Irving Stokes Scholarship, P.O. Box 322 Mt. To Thomasena Stokes Marshall, Irving Stokes, Jr., family friends and associates of Irving Stokes Sr. to honor a man and his family.

We send our heartfelt condolences to honor a man that reflects the trials ,tribulations ,triumphs and family challenges which influenced a life shaped by political inequities which inspired the Great Migration, assimilating to New York City, the military experience, raising a family with the unique dynamics of the foreign urban landscape of 1950's. Irving Stokes, Sr and his family resided in a Bronx NY apartment on Fulton Avenue; later relocating to a house in Queens Village, NY; and the genesis to a grand re-migration back to South Carolina. The return represents a reconnection with the ancestral roots from our collective African heritage which influences our culture today. Our heritage is exhibited in our speech patterns, world renowned sweet grass art form and Gullah cuisine, Low Country lifestyle and tradition, each of which represents our unique journey from the motherland. This is our story, which is both our legacy and a work in progress. My family is currently planning and are expecting to continue to build upon the legacy inspired by Isaac and Adelle Boston on our collective property in Mount Pleasant, SC.

My Sister Rebecca, niece Thomasena, nephews Irving and Tony are all role models as well as deceased niece Deidre and other of this family's grandchildren and great grandchildren.
You all represent a classic American success story. We've learned so much from each of you; this family inspires us. God bless you all.
