Hugh Farris Obituary

Hugh Albert Farris, Sr. Charleston - Hugh Albert (Bert) Farris Sr., 98, husband of Carolyn G. Farris, of Charleston, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2022 at his residence. Bert lived a long full life. He was born on February 10, 1924 in Andrews SC, son to the late Margaret M. Joyner and Hugh Albert Farris. He grew up in Charleston SC and attended parochial schools. He voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 to later become a Naval Aviation Machinist's Mate during WWII. After completing his military service in 1946, he attended the Citadel studying Civil Engineering and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1950. He met his sweetheart, Carolyn, shortly before graduating college and they married in 1949. Their marriage would span 72 incredible years. He worked as a civil engineer for 61 years and started his career in 1950, ending it in 2011. He was 87 when he retired. He is survived by his five children: Theresa Farris Dacar (and husband, Tom) of Cullman AL, Hugh Albert Farris, Jr. (and wife, Terry) of Summerville, Elizabeth Farris Dettrey (and husband, Joe) of Charleston, Kenneth John Farris (and wife, Connie) of Charleston, and David Godfrey Farris (and wife, Vickie) of Summerville. He leaves behind his grandchildren: Theresa's family: Renee Chmura (and husband, Zephyr); Hugh's family: Daniel Farris and Allison Alsuradi (and husband, Feras), Eric and Richard Blair; Elizabeth's family: Michelle Ivy (and Russell Duke), Ryan Ivy (and wife, Allison), Nathan "Aiden" Ivy (and wife, Danielle); Kenneth's family: Keely Farris, Joe "Little Joe" Farris, William and Catherine Heckman and Logan Sykes; David's family: Jacob Farris, and Julia Farris. He had 16 great- grandchildren, 1 great-great- grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was an adored and respected husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, friend and patriarch. He was a well-respected engineer in the community and his professional circles of friends and colleagues. During his long career, he worked for The Federal Bureau of Public Roads, The Southern Division Naval Facilities Command and as a consulting engineer. Some of his most notable projects with the Bureau were launch pads, runways and taxiways at Cape Canaveral FL. After leaving the Bureau in 1967, he accepted a position with South Div. Nav. Fac. and worked on military facilities around the globe. He retired from South Div. Nav. Fac. at the age of 55 and continued to work another 32 years as a consulting engineer. Notable projects were, a waste water treatment plant at the Cherokee Indian Reservation, resident engineer at the Charleston Water Front Park, Charleston parking garages, the Mt. Pleasant port expansion and the Charleston International Airport runways. His hobbies included golfing, playing tennis, following the stock markets, keeping up with world events and politics, traveling and connecting with friends. He had a passion for construction of just about any kind. He would take note of how buildings were being erected or how roads were built. He was a Christian, who shared his faith through bible study and his daily life. He followed Catholic teachings and prayer. He will be remembered for his leadership and strength. His big heart, strong will, and intellect will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn, his brothers, Kenneth Charles Farris and Robert (Bobby) Devereaux, and his grandson, Daniel Lynn Farris.
