Howard Taylor Obituary

Howard Arthur "Buck" Taylor Mt. Pleasant - Howard Arthur "Buck" Taylor, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Taylor passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019 surrounded by his loving family and dear friends, Rene and Dan Severns and Shirley Lorick. Buck was born August 16, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Howard Arthur Taylor and the late Catherine Brittle Taylor. He graduated from Charleston High School and due to the untimely death of his father, he went to work for the Charleston County Police Department to help support his family. Buck was a desk sergeant for two years and then walked a "beat" on Spruill Avenue, and oh the stories he could tell! He later became a private investigator for the law firm of Rittenburg, Seymour and Graham. His interest in law enforcement and at the urging of his friends, he ran for the office of Clerk of Court for Charleston County. Buck was elected Clerk of Court in 1968 and held that position for 24 years until his retirement in 1993. As Clerk of Court he was very active in the South Carolina Association of Counties and served as president for one term. Buck was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking his family boating and on Sunday afternoon picnics. He looked forward to his weekly card games and amazingly he always won or broke even! When Buck wanted to relax he would read, do cross word puzzles or enjoy his favorite - Milky Ways and ice cream! In 1956, Buck and a few friends created the East Cooper Outboard Motor Club located on Goldbug Island of which he was the last living charter member. Buck is survived by "three girls", Vyonne Taylor Metz (Chris) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ruth Taylor of North Charleston, SC and Catherine Taylor Tezza (Bob)of Irmo, SC. He has six grandchildren, Beth Ancone (Chris), Kevin Nielson (Laura), Taylor Woodie (Sean), Katie Hiott (Ashley), Vyonne Tezza and Kristen Watson (Andrew). Buck also had eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor, his father, Howard Arthur Taylor, his mother, Catherine Brittle Taylor and a brother, Julian Thomas Taylor. I was heart broken to see the death notice of my former boss, Howard "Buck" Taylor. He was truly a wonderful person to work with at Family Court. He was also a lover of my mother's potato pies. To the family, you have my deepest sympathy.

All I can say is they'll never ever be another "Buck" Taylor. He was gracious and so compassionate to give me an opportunity to work for him in Family Court when he was Clerk of Court. During the era of Lucille Matthews, Hilda Jefferson, Attorney Hans Paul, Hazel Smalls, Judge Richter, Attorney Charles Goldberg and other legends, I cherish those memories and opportunities. When I relocated to the Virgin Islands, I was deeply saddened because I had to leave a group of people that I enjoyed working with and working for. As a young bride in the 70's, I received the unselfish guidance and words of wisdom from my bosses Mr.Taylor and Lucille Matthews which will always be embedded in my spirit. Having leaders on a job that will take the time to instill, reinforce and encourage the same principles and values to a young employee in an entry level position, in which they are taught from home from their parents, continuing to mold them in making them productive individuals in the workforce and the world is truly an blessing. It was a privilege and pleasure working with these awesome people. Thank You God for Blessing me and others for the Undying Memories of Mr. Howard "Buck" Taylor, Clerk of Court.

I worked for my uncle, Mitch Graham, when I finished school. Buck was there as his investigator. I learned a lot about the law from Buck. I loved listening to his stories. My sister was in a horrible wreck when she was 16. Mitch was contacted and he sent Buck to meet the ambulance and get her admitted to MUSC since our parents were out of town. Not only did he get her to MUSC but he also arranged for the best plastic surgeon to repair her face. I believe that getting her to MUSC quickly saved her life. My family was forever indebted to Buck for saving my sister. Buck was there again to help when my mother died very suddenly. He was a great friend. I loved sharing an office with him and still remember some of his stories. Even though he is gone, so many of us are left with Buck jokes and stories, he will never be forgotten. My prayers are with all of you.

Buck Taylor was a great friend for many years. I remember when he was at the Mitch Graham law firm. His kindness in helping me with my career in law enforcement will never be forgotten. He was always funny but took the time for serious advice. I don't know where I would be today without his help !
God bless you.

What a wonderful person and friend for so many years to my Mama and Daddy (Pinky & Paul) and to me. I will miss seeing him at Christmas and our talks when I checked up on him. He is now with the wonderful group that cared for each other over the years together.
Much sympathy and love Yvonne, Ruthie, Catherine and families.

Buck was one of a kind: a gentleman, funny, and always looked out for young lawyers who didn't have the slightest idea of what they were doing in the old court house. As a young solicitor, I often visited him in his office: never sitting down, he would start the conversation not with a "hello" but with "what do you want now!" He would have a twinkle in his eye and would always get done what needed to be done in the court room or in the Clerk's office. He meant business as evidenced by the shotgun displayed on the wall over his desk, but with a dismissive laugh, he would tell you to get on after he solved whatever problem we dropped in his lap. And can we agree that he had the best of Charleston accents?! With sadness.....

A kinder southern gentleman you will never find. Every day at the clerks office with Buck Taylor was such a pleasure it did not seem like work. Prayers for all the family.

I am so sorry for your loss! Having lost my father so early in life, I never knew he was a private investigator for my fathers law firm. I knew my dad loved him so much which made me love him so much! I remember my dad riding by his home on Shem Drive in order to talk and Mr. Taylor was always so jovial with the five children in the car. I will never forget it because he was never as stressed as my dad was and always had a genuine smile on his face and genuinely knew had to show affection. Thank you Mr. Taylor for loving me when you didnt even know you were doing it!❤
