Howard Sherman Obituary

Howard Bruce Sherman CHARLESTON - Howard Bruce Sherman, 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family and close friends on Saturday, May 25, 2024. He is survived by the love of his life, Leigh Walker Sherman, two brothers, Ivan Sherman (Mark Ledet) of New Orleans and Mitchell Sherman (Joann), of Mount Pleasant. Howard was loved and adored by his stepchildren, Hannah, Walker and William Manzi and was an amazing uncle to Stacey, Molly and David Sherman. He is survived by several cousins, Merridith Sherman Glazer (Howard) of Charlotte, NC, Alan (Neda) Nussbaum of Charleston, Jane (John) Douglas of Charleston, Susan (Brian) Reider, Amy (Edward) Kronsberg of Charleston, Jeffery (Gigi) Sabel of Charleston, Sanford (Stephanie) Sabel of Tampa, FL, Ronnie (Heidi) Addlestone of Nashville, TN and Ann Apple of Charleston, and Jeanne (Alan) Lieberman of Charleston, SC. He is predeceased by his two first cousins, Irene Sabel of Nashville, TN, and Randy Sherman of Charlotte, NC. Howard was born in Charleston, SC on January 17, 1955 to Minnie Nussbaum Sherman and Harold Irving Sherman, who predeceased him. After graduating from Florida State University in 1977, Howard joined his father in the Sherman Agency, a business venture involving real estate, bonds and insurance. Upon the passing of his father in 2013, Howard became president of the Sherman Agency and enjoyed working for the family business for over 45 years. Howard was an extraordinary businessman whose accomplishments had a generational impact on individuals and families. He was a man of faith and a lifelong member of Synagogue Emanuel. He was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and pillar of the community. He was an active member of the Florida State Seminole Club, Chairman of the Sherman Foundation, and Chairman of the Henry and Sylvia residential Yaschik Foundation. He was also a long-time board member of the Sherman House, a facility for low-income seniors located in West Ashley. Howard lived life passionately. He was selfless and kind. His generosity knew no bounds. He never met a stranger and welcomed everybody with warmth and compassion. An incorrigible jokester, he lived his life to the very fullest and was admired and adored by all who knew them. When Howard met the love of his life, Leigh, they set off creating incredible lifetime memories around the globe. Those memories often included traveling the world with friends and family and spending time at their home in Florida, where he also amassed numerous friendships. Howard's lasting legacy will be that he made an indelible imprint on those whose life he touched. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends and will always be reflected upon with deep admiration and warmth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MUSC Foundation, in support of Hollings Cancer Center or the Heart & Vascular Center, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450. So sorry for your loss. Does anyone know if this is the Howard that also attended the University of Tampa for one year as a freshman? (Wonderful memories!)

We hold many fond memories of times spent together with Howie both in Florida and Charleston and will miss his optimism and great smile. We recall one trip to Charleston when we were on babysitting detail with our granddaughter. Howie was so flexible and accommodating, ensuring that all enjoyed a good time, even with our grandbaby in tow. RIP Howie - you will be missed.

I'm also saddened to hear of Howard's death. Some of the happiest times of my life was spending Summers in CHS w/ my cousins in W.Ash, S. Windwemere- inevitably a gang of us hanging out w/ the Shermans!
My best tribute to Howard is that somehow he knows he will be missed greatly & recalled often.

Howard´s legacy of kindness and compassion will live on far beyond his earthly life in the hearts of those around him. He was a man who touched many hearts and in turn those hearts went on to touch still more hearts much like a wave in the ocean or a ripple in the sea. You who love him may never fully know the extent of his reach.

I was extremely shocked to hear of Howards passing. He has been a friend of my family and also his whole family for many years. Growing up we lived right next to each other on Confederate Circle. We had lots of fun together growing up , pool parties at his home and much more memories as there is too many to name. Howard was a good friend through the years even though we did not see each other often , if I needed him for something he would lend a helping hand. I offer my deepest condolences to Ivan , Mitchell and all of Howards family as I am truly so sorry to hear oh his passing . He will be sadly missed between me and my brother Larry, because we often speak of Howard wondering how he is doing. Howard I hope you rest in peace and you will definetly be missed by Larry and myself. I will never forget the times we had growing up and the closeness my family had with yours.

I grew up with Howard all thru childhood and also lived next door to him when we were both living at home with our parents on Confederate Cr. in South Windermere. Howard and I spent a lot of time together growing up and I will miss him. He has been a true friend thru the years to me and my family. I could go on but there are not enough words for me to say about Howard other than he will be missed by me and my family and those who he touched the lives of. An incredible human being. May you rest in peace my friend. Larry Levinson

Howard had the best sense of humor. He could see an opportunity in a situation that the average person would not see. I believe that he was one of the smartest people in our high school class. He was a one of a kind guy and one of the most memorable classmates I had.He could make a boring event fun. He will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

So many fond memories of Howard at St. Andrews High School. Everyone knew and loved him. I helped him navigate the ship on our senior trip, because he had crutches, and a broken leg. Always laughing. Between Howard and Andy Solomon, we were always entertained. Thanks for the laughs, Howard. I will always remember you with a smile.
