Howard Quattlebaum Harleyville, SC - Howard Joseph Quattlebaum, 92, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, SC. Born in Harleyville, March 1, 1924, he was the son of James William and Naomi Heaton Quattlebaum. He was married to his beloved late wife, Dixie Rogene Westbury Quattlebaum, for 62 years. He served his Lord faithfully for many years at the Harleyville United Church, then later at the Harleyville Southern Methodist Church, where he was a member. He is survived by his son, Roger Clay (Cindy) Quattlebaum, of St. Matthews; granddaughter, Robin (Tracy) Beck of Summerville; grandsons, Bart (Sharie) Quattlebaum of Cameron, Brett (Emily) Quattlebaum of Ridgeville, Clay Quattlebaum of Nashville, TN, Barry Quattlebaum of St. Matthews; and seven great-grandchildren (Micah, Owen, Ryan, Cale, Natalie, Knox and Hayes). Also, surviving is brother, Wade Lucious Quattlebaum of Ridgeville, brother-in-law, James Knight of Harleyville, and many, many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Howard was predeceased by his daughter, Monte Greer Quattlebaum. Also deceased are siblings, James Langdon Quattlebaum, Charles William Quattlebaum, Naomi Meta Q. Blanks, Laura Catherine Q. Krantz, Cora Ozella Q. Knight, and John Walton "Peter Rabbit" Quattlebaum. Howard served his country in the 157th infantry of the US Army as a first scout and rifleman in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre of WWII. He received the EAMET medal with 5 bronze stars for service in the campaigns of Naples-Foggia, Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in those battles. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and was recognized as a Sharpshooter. After 30 years of service as an electrician, Howard retired from Giant Cement Company. He continued to serve the community of Harleyville as the town handyman and resident gardener extraordinaire. He was an avid outdoorsman, a skilled hunter and dedicated fisherman. He served many years on the board for Indian Field Campmeeting. He loved his country, his family and his dear friends. He truly was one belonging to those recognized as the Greatest Generation. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in the Harleyville Southern Methodist Church, with Reverend Haskell Parler and Pastor Reggie Thomas officiating. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in the Harleyville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bart Quattlebaum, Brett Quattlebaum, Clay Quattlebaum, Micah Beck, Tony Quattlebaum, Bill Westbury and Danny Westbury.
