Howard Krauss Obituary

Howard Warren Krauss, Sr. JOHNS ISLAND - Entered into eternal rest on the morning of December 4, 2010, Howard Warren Krauss, Sr., widower of Julia Electa Brown Krauss. Residence, Johns Island, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services in Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church this Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 11 am. Burial will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Mr. Krauss was born September 18, 1915, in Staten Island, NY, a son of the late John William Krauss of Freudental, Odessa, Ukraine and the late Eugenia Schmidt Krauss of Charleston. He graduated from Murray Vocational High School in 1935 and entered the Civilian Conservation Corps, working on projects in South Carolina and Oregon. After leaving the Corps, he was united in marriage with Julia Electa Brown of Center, GA on June 22, 1940, in Abbeville, SC at the Abbeville Presbyterian Church. During World War II, he served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Charleston and with the Tenth Army in Okinawa. He and his wife were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church, Johns Island, founded in 1952. He was a long-serving member of the Board of Directors of St. John's Water Company and was part of the group that first brought water to the island in 1978. For thirty-two years he was employed by the United States Postal Service, conscientiously serving the people of Johns Island as a rural letter carrier for sixteen years. After retirement, he continued serving his community as a volunteer at Tricounty Family Ministries of Charleston. He was presented with a Neighborhood Heroes Award by the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter of the American Red Cross for his decades of volunteer work. He was a Past Master of Fidelity Lodge #304, A.F.M. on Johns Island. He is survived by a daughter, Electa K. Hoyle of Johns Island; two sons, Howard W. Krauss, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant and John A. Krauss of Hollywood; a sister, Marguerite Brewer of Rocky Mount, NC; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Tricounty Family Ministries, 3349 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. I have so many fond memories of the Krauss family at Faith Lutheran Church when I was young. You may not even remember me and my family, but I do remember Electa and Chippie, who were my age. My heart goes out to you.
