I was a classmate of Howard both at Davidson and South Carolina law school. He was extremely bright and witty. I still remember Howard's stories about being a lieutenant in the Army at Ft. Polk, LA. After law school we moved to Texas, and we lost touch. I am very sorry not to be able to catch up again. Susan, my wife, Keith, and I send our sincerest condolences. We are sure that he leaves a big void.

Did not know Howard personally, but certainly knew of his many accomplishments and contributions to the S.C. Bar, all bringing honor to a much maligned profession. I did know Susan from my years at Newberry College where she was a librarian. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers. May God grant you His peace.

I practiced with then Senator later Attorney General Travis Medlock from 1973 to 1981. We were counsel to the SCEA and dealt with the variety of issues surrounding public education desegregation. It was intense with significant constitutional challenges including free speech, due process and equal protection battles. Howard was our first law clerk. Tall, lanky, baritone, and boasted of drinking a case of beer a day while in the military, albeit a PK. High metabolism, he claimed. He fit right in, even between two Wofford grads. I can´t remember if we offered him a position when he graduated but I think we did. But he had enough insight to know our practice was not long enduring and most the issues, still largely unsolved, faded by the end of the 70s. I followed his career from a distance and regret not having done better. He was packed with potential and his life and service establish he did not let it go to waste. A special person leaving much, much too soon.

So sorry to hear about Howard leaving us. We all knew each other at Davidson, and Howard was one of my favorites -- always funny, a little goofy, a great friend and a reliable fount of wit and charm. I shall miss him!
