Hezekiah Brown, Jr. JAMES ISLAND - Hezekiah was born on May 21, 1924 to his senior and Virginia Whaley of Charleston, South Carolina. He attended school in the Charleston County School District. In 1971, he received his high school diploma from James Island High School. He joined the United States Army at the age of 19. He served through 1947 in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. He returned home to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in the Transportation shop, Public Works Department. While there he was an oiler of cranes and later was one of two African American employees promoted to a higher positions by the Civil Service Commission. Despite opposition from some South Carolina State Legislators, the victory of the action was his training to become one of the two African American crane operators at that facility. Hezekiah was a progressive community leader because he loved to devote time and energy into the uplifting of all of James Island and Charleston County. He worked for the rights of voters and the well-being of those less fortunate than himself. He organized meetings to gain as well as encourage voter rights and voter participation and actively worked for many years at the poles during elections. He served faithfully with his beloved Payne Church, the Masons, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He was a former and served on the Board of the Sea Island Farmers Cooperative. He also served as chaplin for this organization. His aim in life was to inspire others to contribute to the development, maintenance and improvement for the better good of all men. The relatives and friends of Mr. Hezekiah Brown, Jr., widower of Elizabeth Hopkins Brown, those of his children, William Brown, Sr. (Josephine), Spencer Brown, Kenneth Brown (Lillian), Angela Gilchrist, Helene Walker, Linda Hicklin, Russell Brown, Connie Waring (Curtis), Shelia Major, Mark Brown (Michelle) and Carlton Brown (Shirley), grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, Edward Green (Rosalee) and Barbara Gilliard and a host of other relatives are invited to attend his HOME GOING SERVICE, Thursday, December 10 2015, 11:00a.m. at Payne Church, 1560 Camp Road, James Island, SC, Elder Thomas Junious, Pastor. Viewing at the church on Wednesday from 6:30p.m. until 8:p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:p.m. Viewing at the church on Thursday from 10:00 am until time of the service. Our hearts are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your loved one; at the same time, we rejoice in God our Savior for the life he lived and in knowing this awesome Man of God has gone home to be with the Lord.

Yet if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which
sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word
of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the
Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Hezekiah. I met Mr. Brown in 2002 when I came to work for the Town of James Island. Mr. Brown was always very kind and always had an encouraging word to share. May God bless you during this time of bereavement.

I offer condolences to the family and close friends of Mr. Hezekiah Brown on his death. What a remarkable gentleman, so friendly and with such a warm demeanor. Mr. Brown had the capacity to draw people out and make them feel good about themselves with that big big smile. He never fail to stop and chat whenever you saw him at Payne Church or in the community. His presence in and around James Island will surely be missed by his family, and friends. Rest in the Lord Mr. Brown.
