HERSCHEL SCHACTER Obituary

SCHACTER--Rabbi Herschel. The Yeshiva University family is profoundly grieved by the passing of Rabbi Herschel Schacter, an outstanding alumnus of Yeshiva College and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) who was the beloved husband of Pnina Schacter and cherished father of Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter, University Professor of Jewish History and Jewish Thought, and Senior Scholar at Yeshiva University's Center for the Jewish Future, (and Yocheved) Schacter, and Miriam (and Rabbi Benjamin) Schacter Gampel, and an adored grandfather and great grandfather. He served with distinction as the revered spiritual leader of the Mosholu Jewish Center in the Bronx, NY from 1947 until 1999 when the synagogue closed and established the Mosholu Jewish Center Rabbinic Fellowship at RIETS in his honor. Prior to joining the synagogue, Rabbi Herschel Schacter was a US Army Chaplain who participated in the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp and played an important role in helping the resettlement of Displaced Persons after the Holocaust. He enjoyed national prominence as a brilliant and inspiring orator and was Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish organizations and held many other significant leadership positions. His last professional role was as the Morris and Gertrude Bienenfeld Director of Rabbinic Services at the Community Service Division of RIETS. Beloved by congregants, Holocaust survivors and colleagues in the rabbinate, he will be sorely missed. May the entire Schacter family and all who loved him be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Yeshiva University Richard M. Joel, President Norman Lamm, Chancellor

I remember Rabbi Schacter from my youth in the late 1940s at Brooklyn Boy Scout Camp. As camp chaplain he was an inspirational figure in those early days. He was a youth leader that everyone loved. I extend my condolences to his family and all that loved him.

I can still hear his clear voice in my inner ear, evoked from my boyhood in the Bronx during the 1950s. I was too young to understand his sermons, but I felt the power of his oratory skills even back then. I called him in 1999 when I heard that the Mosholu Jewish Center was closing down. He inquired with interest about my life and was kind enough to send me the memorial plaques of my grandparents that once were affixed to the walls of the Synagogue. It was an honor to have known him, even if fleetingly.
