Herschel Hudson Obituary

HUDSON, Herschel Beloved husband, father, and friend, Dr. Herschel Curlee Hudson, husband of Maxine Taylor Hudson of Mt. Pleasant, SC and father of Shera Lynn Hudson of Atlanta, GA, was lost to us all on September 17, 2008 at the age of 82. All funeral services will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Dr. Hudson was the son of the late Herschel Lilburn Hudson and Fay Curlee Hudson of Charleston, SC. His amazing accomplishments began at an early age, when he was honored to play as a youth in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra directed by George Theodore Wickman. He attended the Citadel, prior to volunteering to serve in the United States Marine Corps in World War II, where he served proudly as a seagoing marine aboard the USS Lake Champlain, during the time it was commissioned and de-commissioned including when it broke the transatlantic speed record returning from Gibralter, and also the USS Missouri. He earned his Ph.D. and a Master's Degree from Indiana University with concentrations in cross cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and sociology. He also received undergraduate and Master's Degrees from the University of South Carolina. He did graduate research in anthropology while living among the Eskimos in Barrow, Alaska and in the 1970's brought the Leakey Foundation to the Citadel. Among his publications was the statistical book Classifying Social Data. He retired as Professor Emeritus from the Citadel, where he was instrumental in establishing their major in Criminal Justice. He was perhaps best known as a talented pianist and as a man with a big smile and generous heart and high principles. He will also be remembered as an animal and nature lover, photographer, artist, track star, chocolatier, past president of Trident Amateur Radio Club, and an active member of the United States Seagoing Marines Association. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maxine Taylor Hudson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Shera Lynn Hudson of Atlanta, GA; brother, William T. (Bill) Hudson; his brother-in-law, Prentice M. Taylor; and nieces and nephews. The family requests that you celebrate his life in your heart and in your thoughts. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Cooper Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 583, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29465 or Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, P.O. Box 21833, Charleston, SC 29413. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website, www.jhenrystuhr.com. Herschel was an amazing man indeed and I owe a great deal of who I today to him. When I was struggling to understand mathematics in High School, at the urging of my mother, he agreed to tutor me. I did not realize at the time what a blessing it was to have such an intelligent, patient and understanding instructor. I was more interested in dating his lovely daughter so it was a struggle for me to maintain focus. But somehow through all the distractions he was able to turn on a light bulb in my head. I went on to major in mathematics in college. Over the years since, I never really got a chance to thank him properly for changing my life. But I am consoled in the fact that there were many whose lives were changed by knowing him. Herschel gave so that others could succeed and this legacy will continue always in those he touched. So from all of us, thank you God for allowing us to share some time with this great man - Herschel Hudson.

Aunt Maxine and Shera Lynn,
My and Tina's Thoughts and Prayers are with you at this time. I have fond memories of Uncle Hershel and admired him greatly. It brings on a smile to think about his teaching me how to use my first 35 mm camera; coaching me as I learned to play the trumpet; playing that piano so hard that it moved across the living room; learning the Judo moves, and telling my friends and letting them try that cologne that my Uncle Hershel formulated. Those are some of the memories I have from years past with Uncle Hershel. Love, Johnny
