What fond memories I have of "Duff". He supported me and sponsored me to become the District Ranger of the Wambaw RD in 1973. I remember when he knew I was going, he called and said " well podner, you have just died and are going to Heaven". I went to McClellanville and stayed for over three years...it was great and I surely understand why ole Duff loved it so much. I am now 75, still working as a contractor for USFS at Schenck Job Corps and will carry a piece of Duff & the Wambaw with me forever.

Duffy was responsible for my 30 year career with the USFS for which I will ever be grateful. He was first class in my ranking and I am so glad our paths crossed in 1970 and for many years afterwards. Rest in the arms of our Savior, Duffy.

"Miss Eleanor": You may remember me as you and Duff had me up for dinner at different times when I worked on the Francis Marion and would come up and go hunting or fishing with Duff. There is no better than Duff. Tears are rolling down my cheeks as I write this and think back on his accomplishments, especially those times he made a point to share time with those of us who followed behind him. RIP Duff my good friend.
My prayers of comfort for you "Miss Eleanor".

So, Duff, the long journey is over, and my, what a journey to celebrate! If there was ever a well-lived life, yours was. With a keen eye for ecological processes and a gentlemanly approach, you changed the management of National Forest lands in the South for the better. Along the way you inspired a great many young Forest Service biologists, including me. Be at your ease now and remember all the wonderful happenings of a rich, exceptional life. I'll always know where to find you come springtime. You will be along the far ridge, or down near the lowland creek and the gobbling will be fine. Farewell Old Friend.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of a legend! As a junior forester/wildlife biologist, Duffy was my mentor and hero. He embodied the real meaning of natural resource conservation and thru him I gained an appreciation for people and stewardship of wild fauna and flora. His legacy will live on as generation after generation will benefit from his unselfish, patient, and fun-filled contributions. "Partner" made many enjoyable memories for my son and I and made me a better person. Missed but never forgotten.

A great and humble man whose life touched so many. I will always remember netting mullets for the Men's club.

Dear "Miss Eleanor": I worked with Duff during the early 1970's when Max Peterson was the Regional Forester, and I was his secretary. He was a joy to work with and we had so much fun with him. He talked of his beloved Miss Eleanor all the time. I send my sincerest sympathy to you and know that you have so many Forest Service friends at your side to help you. -- Mary Maher
