Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

May 9, 2007

Mrs. Orvin, Tyler, Katie, & Jared:
I remember me and Katie playing sports together, and not a game went by that he wasn't there. I remember Katie getting hurt and Mr. Herb being the first one to run and check on her. Even though you can't hear him tell you how proud he is of all of you I know he is. Every time I would see him and ask about his kids he would smile and tell me all about their latest accomplishments, and I could feel how much he loved you. I know that he is in heaven right now pointing you guys out to anyone and everyone and telling them how great you are. Katie I'm glad that I got a chance to play sports with you or I would have never known your dad. I always knew for certain if I did a good job when your Dad would tell me because he told me the truth even if I was terrible. I am praying for every single one of you. I pray that God grants you peace and the courage to move forward in your life.
God Bless

As part of the dental community,we were so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow. I am a hygienist and I had the opportunity to work in Herbies office on a few different occasions. I shadowed Rochelle many years ago as a requirement in school, that was the first time I met Herbie. My first impression was I noticed what a good sense of humor he had. And what a great smile! I also temped in his office more recently in hopes of getting a job there. He told me he had plans on opening a satelite office in Moncks Corner in a few years. My heart broke when I learned of his passing. My daughter Danielle played softball with Katie years ago and Herbie took them to their all-star games that were out of town. Danielle sends her deepest sympathies to you Katie. The dental community has truly lost one of the greatest members ever. He will never be forgotten. 14 pages of this guestbook and the line at the wake that was blocks long for hours only shows what kind of a man Herbie was. He was one of a kind.

Jared
I am so sorry I did not get to see you before I had to get back home. Your dedication to the game after Herbie's death, was unbelievable. You have your father's looks, spirit, character, and strong will, and I have been so proud to call all of your family, my friends.
It was an honor to work w/ Herbie, and so very sad when I had to leave. I'll never forget that he closed the office to attend my dad's funeral. How blessed I was to have known him.
God bless you and your family, and give you peace.

Be still like desert shrub.

To the Orvin Family,

We would just like to take this opportunity to extend our heart felt sympathy to you during this difficult time. Many times we don't really understand why things happen the way that they do. At these particular moments we just have to put all of our trust in the Lord and cast all of our cares upon him. Proverbs 3:5,6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path."

God bless you all!

To The Entire Orvin Family
Words are not enough at a time of such sorrow. During our school days, Herbie was always kind, with a happy smile on his face. I was so proud of Herbie when he set up practice in St. Stephen and became my family dentist. He always took the time to talk & always went above & beyond what was expected of him. You were blessed to have such a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and nephew. Please know the Orvin family has the heartfelt prayers & thoughts of the St. Stephen community.

Our family will dearly miss Dr. Herbie. My children ask me everyday, who will we go to now? That is a very tough question to answer. To the Orvin Family:
I will never forget Mr Herb and all the things he did for me. I know he did things for everyone, but he had a way of making you feel special. He taught us the value of being part of a team and giving back to the community. He loved Timberland Athletics since day one but never forgot his Macedonia Foxes either. Mr Herb invited me to play travel ball with his AAU Lowcountry Foxes team. Those were some incredible memories with him. It was hard to play this last game without him but I could still hear him in my head saying "You got a hot bat, Dex!" I think I will always be able to hear those words of encouragement in my head no matter what I do. Mr. Herb was a great neighbor, coach, and friend. Thanks for sharing him with all of us because I will never forget the things that he taught me.
Love you always,

Mr. Herbie was a great man. I remember the countless times I would go into the dentist office with the thought that I might have a cavity and be unhappy for the rest of the day, but everytime I'd go, Mr. Herbie would always talk to me about school, sports, and ask about Jared and how he was doing and brighten my day by doing what he did best, caring for others and helping out in whatever way he could.

He is missed and loved by many, and has touched so many hearts in his lifetime. He will always remain in my thoughts and prayers. Jared and the rest of the Orvins, remember that Dr. Herbie is watching you from above and will always be in your heart. He will never be forgotten.

My heart goes out to all of you for the great loss that everyone suffered Monday. Mr Herbie was a great husband, father, and phenominal friend to the many people that knew him. Mr. Herb has been a fixture in the Timberland baseball program for as long as I remember and one of our biggest, most dedicated fans. Not a game went by without him there, keeping the book, encouraging all the players. Its going to to be hard to imagine baseball games without him there. He was, is and will always be a HUGE part of Timberland Baseball. People like Mr.Herb dont come along very often. He was truly a lifelong friend that I could count on for anything I ever needed. Because everytime I went in (especially in the fall) me and Mr. Herb talked highschool football. Actually he did most of the talking (since he usually had a hand or tool in my mouth) and I chimed in with an occasional head nod or an uh huh.

On game nights, Timberland's stands will never quite be the same, but I'm sure the rest of us will pick up his slack, cheering or voicing an opinion toward a referee or coach.

I feel like everyone is just a little bit better of a person for knowing him. May God heal your broken hearts.

With love, Phillip

Just read the article in the Sun News about the emotional baseball win last night and realized that Herb and I were in dental school at the same time. My youngest son is a senior at Lake City high school, plays 3rd base on the baseball team. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Boys, your father would be so very, very proud of you, I share his pride. God bless you, allow His grace to comfort you. Carry the wonderful memories of your Dad forward with you. Celebrate his life by living yours to the fullest. You will see him again.

To the entire Orvin family,
Words cannot express how deep my love is for each and every one of you. Karen, without you and Herbie I would not have two beautiful nieces and a handsome nephew. Herbie was a wonderful man who would do anything for his family and friends. I will be forever grateful for all the things he did for my family and for always making me feel like I was part of your family. Through your faith and always keeping God first you all will have the strength to continue doing all the things that he loved so deeply. Remember that the Lord has His loving arms around you all and that He will never leave you alone. I will contiue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I will always be here for each of you no matter what you need. I love you all.

Tyler and Katie,

Words cannot express how sorry I was to hear about your dad's passing. Alison called me last night. Even though I only met your dad once or twice at parent night, he always struck me as a caring parent and generally nice guy. My parents and grandmother are patients of his and always raved about what a wonderful dentist and friend he was to them. He will be greatly missed by an entire community for sure. I know this is a very difficult time for you and your family, but God will get you through this. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers.

Keith and I are deeply saddened over Herbie's sudden death. I have know him since he was a little child and it was easy to see what a strong Christian, family man he grew up to be. As a wife and a mother I feel so sorry for you Karen and Edna. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling. I feel so much sympathy for his children. Jared is the one I know best, but it was easy to see how devoted you all were to your Daddy. As a sister, I can relate to your suffering, Pam and Neal. And, Virginia, I also know that Edna's children are like your own. You also are in our prayers. We pray that God's love will sustain you all through your sorrow. Betty

Herbert was a wonderful friend when we were in school. He always had a smile on his face and laughed at every impersonation I did of actors. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I'd sing an Elvis song and got kicked out of class and I could hear laughing when I was in the hallway. he was a wonderful man and someone I am proud to call my friend.

To the family I want you to know that you are in my prayers and when God calls me home, I will see Herbert's smiling face again. Bless you all.
