Herbert Conner Obituary

CONNER, Herbert The Reverend Herbert K. Conner, S.J., 77, Pastor of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Simpsonville, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at his residence. The only child of the late Herbert A. and Jennie Kuhlke Conner, he was born in Augusta, GA on October 30, 1930. Father Conner entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1948, after graduating from Boys High School in Augusta, GA. Father Conner attended a theologate program at St. Mary's College in St. Marys, KS, and in 1961 returned to Spring Hill College of Mobile, AL where he was ordained as a priest on June 14, 1961. Father Conner came to South Carolina in 1976. His first assignment was to St. Joseph Church in Columbia. He was then assigned pastor of Christ Our King in Mt. Pleasant for the next 12 years. In 1991, he was assigned pastor of St. Mary Magdalene. In July, 2008, he celebrated 60 years as a member of the Society of Jesus. Father Conner was a Fourth Degree Knight. Surviving are cousins, Barbara Mulherin of Augusta, GA and Tom and Peggy Alewine of Lawrenceville, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jesuit Seminary and Mission Fund, 710 Baronne Street, Suite B, New Orleans, LA 70113-1064. A Vigil service will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church.
