Herbert Butler will live on via the wonderful lands of the Lowcountry that he helped to preserve for succeeding generation. He did so in a gentlemanly manner with grace.

Herb Butler will always remain in my mind as a bigger than life character, full of fun and joy and laughter.
We had some really great times during the formative stages of the Chattooga Club when we were all just learning to play 6 wicket croquet. Herb, of course, caught on fast, and was soon beating many of us who had begun earlier. He was competitive but gentlemanly and Sheila was always gorgeous and lovely by his side.
He loved the out of doors, hunting, and having a good stiff drink ( or two!!) in the evening. His Rhett Butler good looks and his smile made him popular everywhere he went.
We will all miss him!

I will never forget the love and kindness that your family always showed mine. Our time with you at GranNanny's SC home (Wicklow Hall), the parties and oyster roasts, are all part of my fondest memories. I especially enjoy recounting the memory of your family sharing the "liquid gold" scotch at your parties. I also fondly remember our connection with your lovely South Carolina dog (I forget her name) that I played a part in your keeping. I miss you both and am so sad I did not get to give Herb a hug before this time. Know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Herbert and Sheila welcomed our family into theirs, accepted total strangers without reservation. He was a fine man with many stories, proud, secure in his life and full of love for Sheila. We will miss him and regret for me is not being able to have learned more from him, and not coming to know him better.. Rest in Peace Herbert, knowing you were loved as well.
