Henry Wolfe Obituary

Henry Bryan Wolfe, Jr. CHARLESTON - Henry Bryan Wolfe, Jr., 85, died at Bishop Gadsden on James Island, SC, on July 21, 2011. Henry was born November 28, 1925, and raised in Cope, SC, the third of four children of Minnie Crider and Henry Bryan Wolfe, Sr. During WWII he joined the Merchant Marines and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Following the war while serving as first mate on Liberty ships he met his beloved wife, Rosemary Russell of Wichita, KS, who was serving as a nurse on board the ship. They were deeply in love and remained married for 53 years. They settled in New Orleans, LA, where Henry worked as a Marine Transportation Specialist with the Army's Port of Embarkation, earning numerous commendations and citations. After retirement he worked for several more years as the Captain of ships operating between the Persian Gulf and the Far East. He earned the rank of Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves before retiring from the service in the mid 1980's. During his life in New Orleans, Henry was active in a variety of Maritime, Church, and Service activities. He was a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Arabi, LA, and he served as the Grand Master of his Masonic Lodge. He moved to Charleston, SC, after Hurricane Katrina. He is survived by his three children, Russell Bryan Wolfe (Elsa Caire), Randolph Joseph Wolfe (Vikki) of New Orleans, LA, and Gina Marie Wolfe (Gary Gorman). He has four grandchildren, Jamin Joseph Muscarello, Evan Randolph Wolfe, and Raleigh Joseph Wolfe, all of New Orleans, and Arianne Elizabeth Wolfe. He has one great-grandson, Donovan Joseph Muscarello of New Orleans. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Wayne Wolfe (Joyce) and his sister-in-law Marie Crider, all of Cope, SC. His wife, Rosemary Russell Wolfe, his brother Jacob Clyde Wolfe, and his sister, Nita Wolfe Canady, predecease him. He will be greatly missed by all his family and dear friends. There will be a graveside service at the Canaan Baptist Church in Cope, SC, on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at 2:00. Flowers may be sent to Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg, SC, or donations may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association. Mr. Hank was a wonderful man--a real "gentle" man in every sense of the word. He was loving and caring and giving of himself ---whether it was giving of vegetables he had grown in his garden or helping my daddy pick up a Christmas tree with his truck. He was such a wonderful friend, along with your mom to my parents--best friends for so many years. True friendship like theirs was rare and precious. I know there was a wonderful reunion in heaven with my daddy opening the door for your dad as my parents sang while your mom and dad embraced!!! Please accept our deepest sympathy on your loss. I have such wonderful memories of your dad and your mom too from my entire life. I only wish I could be there with you to share your sorrow during this difficult time. I offered my mass and communion today for strength for the family to get through this trying period. I send my thoughts prayers and love to ALL of you.

You have my sympathy, and that of my family, in the recent passing of Mr. Wolfe. I do not think I have known a finer man than he was. Although the last time I spoke with him was at my father's funeral at Canaan in 1996, we always inquired about him through Miss Marie, and Jimmy and Joyce. He always seemed to love his home here in Canaan, and the people here. He certainly loved his family and often spoke of them. Like Mr. Clyde, his brother, there was always something about H.B. He was certainly very likable. To spend any time with him at all was to know he had a good heart, a great personality, and a very generous nature,

Although my name will probably not be familiar to his children, we all remember so well when they attended vacation bible school at least one year at Canaan. Gina was a pretty little girl then, and the boys about 12 or so? It seems like so little time ago. It is difficult to believe she could be a Grandmother now.

I am sorry that H.B. was ill the last years of his life. I know that he leaves to his children a legacy of love, and the kind of things that can only be taught by example. You all have our sympathy, and also our prayers and good wishes. Danny Stevenson - 857 Stevenson Road - Cope, South Carolina 29038
