Henry Gibson Obituary

Henry Wright Gibson BARNWELL, SC - Dr. Henry Wright Gibson died Saturday, April 12, 2014 in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 89. Visitation will be at Barnwell United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Barnwell United Methodist Church. Dr. Gibson was born on June 18, 1924 in Batesburg, South Carolina. He graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School, Wofford College and The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Gibson's studies at Wofford College were interrupted as he joined the United States Army Air Force and became a B-24 bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force 446th Bomber Group stationed in England. He flew 25 missions during World War II. Following his service in World War II, Dr. Gibson completed his studies at Wofford College and The Medical University of South Carolina. He received his medical degree in 1950. In 1951 Dr. Gibson moved to Barnwell, South Carolina where he practiced family medicine for 63 years until his death. He loved the art of medicine and the people of Barnwell County. It was there that he could hunt, fish, farm and play his beloved game of golf. Throughout Dr. Gibson's career, he was honored by his patients, friends and medical peers. Some of these honors include Barnwell County Man of the Year, the Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, the State of South Carolina Order of the Silver Crescent, and the South Carolina Family Physician of the Year. In 2009, Wofford College bestowed upon Dr. Gibson the Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree, describing him as the "quintessential country doctor." Dr. Gibson felt called to care for those with no access to health care. This began a long history of medical mission trips which culminated in his founding the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation. After much prayer, hard work and the generous support of others, a medical/dental clinic was built in Limon, Honduras in 1997. A satellite clinic was built in Icoteos, Honduras in 2000. In March 2014 Dr. Gibson participated in his 49th medical mission trip. Dr. Gibson was predeceased by his parents, Dr. William Thornwell Gibson and Kate Bates Wright Gibson, four sisters and a brother. Dr. Gibson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evie Gilliland Gibson; four daughters, Eve Gibson Daniel (Rich), Amy Gibson Montague (Buck), Rosalyn Gibson Morrison, and Katherine Gibson Fritze (Dan); eleven grandchildren, Kinsley, Chad, Emily, Felicia, Rosalyn, Will, Eliza, Katherine, Andrew, Caroline and William; three step-grandchildren, Eli, Addison (Catherine) and Parke; and one step-great-grandchild, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be sent to the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation, P.O. Box 528, Barnwell, South Carolina 29812. Dr. Gibson truly lived the words of his favorite scripture, Matthew 10:8, "Freely you have received, freely give." Mrs. Gibson and family. I had the good fortune of serving with Henry in Honduras several years and worked with him during my stent on the Board. He was a missionary mentor, a friend, a brother in Christ and I will surely miss his smile and wit. I know your memories will last forever, just as mine will. He was a true gentleman and a compassionate human who answered the call to help others. We all will miss him.

Dr. Gibson delivered me in 1958. Shortly thereafter, my family moved to Manning, SC. I had the good fortune to move back to Barnwell in 1986, and thereafter was in need of a doctor. Is Dr. Gibson still practicing? YES. In checking, I was asked if I had ever been at the office. No... but - Dr. Gibson delivered me. THEY FOUND MY FILE! Last seen at 5 weeks old. When Dr. Gibson entered my room, he stared at my chart, stared at me, then proclaimed "My, you've gained a lot of weight since I saw you last". Oh, how we laughed. I loved that man. I am fortunate to have known him.

Our hearts are broken over the loss of a wonderful doctor and a friend to everyone who knew him. Henry Gibson was more than just our family practitioner for many years, he was a man who encouraged and inspired us through his many good deeds. Aside from delivering our daughter 50 years ago and caring for our Mother when she was very sick, he became someone we confided in and respected for his contributions to our community in Barnwell. We offer our sincere sympathy to those who loved him dearly.

I just returned from Limon this past Saturday. It was my first medical mission trip. David spoke so fondly of Doc Gibson- I am sad I didn't get to meet the man who started such a wonderful clinic. His legacy will live on through the work there. Many people have been touched by his love and care. God Bless you all!

Tears welled up in my eyes as I read the obituary of the passing of another of the Greatest Generation. Doctor Gibson delivered three of our four children, the oldest is now 52. Beyond that he was our family doctor and tended my Mother in the last years of her life, often in the middle of the night. One of God's gifts to humanity is now with him

Yvonne and all Dr. Gibson's family,
I am sorry I did not know Dr. Gibson (Henry) was in Providence Hospital until fairly late Friday night. I have always admired his devotion to medicine and the care of others as well as his ability to balance his life.
Though not especially a Bible scholar, thanks to my Denmark, SC upbringing, I know of some scripture. These verses, one already acknowledged, seem appropriate at this time of Dr. Gibson's death:
Matthew 10:8; "Freely you have received, freely give."
John 15:13; "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Isaiah 6:8; "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."
2Timothy 4:7; "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."
Rhoda and I extend to you and all Dr. Gibson's family our heart-felt condolences and wish for you that memories of all the good times spent together will serve to soften the grief that must pervade now.

Doctors are a gift, they know just how to touch our hearts.

I just returned from my first trip to Limon Honduras and was sad to learn of Dr. Gibson's passing. His vision and leadership in founding the clinic created a ripple effect that will continue for years to come. Dr. Gibson has changed the lives of the families in Limon, Icoteas and the surrounding villages. He is respected and loved by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
