Henry Futch Obituary

Henry Alexander Futch WANDO, SC - Henry Alexander "Poppa" Futch, 81, drifted too far from the earthly shore to enter the pearly gates of heaven on Thursday, September 9, 2021. His wife, Harriet, along with their sons, Hank, Hal, and George, mourn his loss as they also praise his "Victory in Jesus". He was born March 13, 1940, in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Little Alton Futch and Mary Gammage.Through his love of the Bible and music, he made his devotion to the Lord well known. He grew in Christ at the Sink Hole outside the campus of Albany High School, where he led early morning prayer. He graduated from Mercer University in 1965, where many enjoyed the stories of his friendship with Otis Redding, during his rise to fame. He lived his life in Nashville, Albany, and Macon, Georgia, and Greenville, Florence, and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. With his involvement in his Life Group at St. Andrew's Church, he led Bible book studies, not to say he didn't also learn from the group he loved. Poppa Futch loved a joke; some good, some bad, and some downright risque;. He loved his friends, one and all, egged on by Mag Greenthaler, Charlie Allbritton, Henry Chandler, Barry Hammett, Parker Tuten, Eddie Ravenel, and Johnny Vaughn, and more recently Tick Hair's backyard squad. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jimmy Futch. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Norris Futch; 3 sons, Hank (Nolie), Hal (Tyler), and George (Lynda); 8 grandchildren, Tatum, Halle, Spencer, Sallie, Henry III, Sarah-Grace Harriet, Molly, and Mary MacAddison; and additional "Futch Family" members, Mary Butz (Logan), Jessica, and Josh; and his father-son bond with Rick Cook, John Young, and Jimmy Mozen. Many know him for signing his special rendition of Guy Clark's "Home Grown Tomatoes" and his collecting Jesus dollars for our mission school in Africa. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, Boy Scouts of America, a founding member of the Looper River Boys, and a gospel leader in his life and music. Services and a celebration of life are being planned for a later date. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Harriet, I am very sorry to hear about Henry. I'm not sure you remember, but he was my oldest daughter's godfather. He reached out with a phone call years ago which went to my answering machine and when I tried to call him back, I couldn't reach him. I just found out that he passed away last year so I'm sorry, and I regret, that we never got back in touch. We had some great times together, some memorable, and some I don't think he would mind me saying, probably not worth remembering. One that stands out was a trip the two of us took to St. Simons for a weekend and we both ran out of money. To find enough money to buy gas to get us home in my 1961 black Thunderbird, Henry hocked his beloved guitar! I always begged him to retrieve it, but I don't think he ever did. On our way home Henry was driving the bird and I was dozing, and I heard a curse word and woke up to see us barreling through a highway stop sign. Fortunately, there was just a pasture in front of us and no cars in the cross traffic! I hope you and family are doing well, and I apologize for the late condolences, but I don't keep up with my old friends like most people do, so my daughter just sent the obit to me so I could at least let you know I have fond memories of the times we spent together. Take care.

While Henry referred to us as "The Northerns" that was ok in his eyes. We loved our visits and listening to his songs. One of my favorite memories which I have shared with family and friends is: Valentine´s Day many years ago spent at the Holiday Inn downtown Charleston
They had a great seafood buffet that evening. There were two Romanian Cello players performing classical music. Of course Henry has a little chat with them and decides he wants to sing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart " Everyone clapped and enjoyed Henry´s singing. I´m sure Henry is in heaven singing to our sweet Lord.
