Henricus Koot Obituary

Henricus M. Koot "Henk" JOHNS ISLAND - Henricus M. Koot, of Johns Island died Tuesday following a courageous battle with cancer. His wife, Pam McMichael, and his children, Christina Koot, her daughter, Ali and husband Mark Annicchiarico, Lisa K. Rader, her daughter Amanda and husband, Bob survive him, as well as his sister, Johanna Gehres, her husband John, brother Gerard Koot and his wife Sheila, many loving nieces and nephews and his faithful dog, Charley. He was predeceased by his parents, Johanna S. & Gijsbertus J. Koot. "Henk" was born in Breezand, The Netherlands in 1940 at the beginning of World War II. His family ran a tulip farm until 1957 when they immigrated to the United States, settling in Kings Park, NY. Upon completion of his education Henk worked in the insurance industry. He was past president of the Casualty Surety Assn. of America and a member of the NYC board of directors for Boy Scouts America. He concluded his 30-year career at Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company as Northeast Regional Vice President. After retiring to Charleston, Henk became a Master Gardener, eventually logging more than a thousand hours of service, including two years as president of the Master Gardener Assn. He created a beautiful garden for his home and fell in love with a golden retriever. He made annual trips with a group from Bethel UMC to Redbird Mission in the heart of Appalachia where he helped to make home repairs. He also volunteered for Sea Island Habitat, HALOS, Special Olympics, an ET housing project, Crisis Ministries, and most recently Bethel UMC's emergency food pantry. After Katrina, Henk felt compelled to take action and received training as an early responder, formed a disaster relief committee at Bethel, and led 3 disaster relief trips to Pascagoula and Gulfport, Miss. where his groups helped to refurbish storm damaged homes. He was this year's recipient of the United Methodist Women's annual mission award. Henk was a man of many projects, but his most important was his love and devotion to his family. His spirit is one of compassion and kindness. His life is a model of quiet dignity and integrity. Those of us who knew and loved him will forever be touched by his presence in our lives. A memorial service in celebration of Henk's life will be held Saturday, June 27, at 4:00 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Hwy., James Island. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall directly after the service. I had the good fortune to meet Henk at a social gathering my company, General Accident Insurance, sponsored downtown NY. I found him to be intelligent, charming and a true gentleman. It was my privilege to have been in his presence. I recently came across a photo of Henk from that gathering; and that triggered lovely memories. May he continue to rest in peace.

My heart goes out to the family of Henk. He was a wonderful person and meant a lot in shaping my career in the insurance industry. I am so blessed that I was able to work with him at Atlantic Mutual. His work ethic and professionalism still guides me today. May God bless the Koot family and comfort you during the time of your loss.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Henk's entire familiy. I will always remember and cherish my years working with Henk at Atlantic Mutual. He was instrumental in assisting me in my decision to accept the company's offer of managing a start up operation in Albany, NY, which turn out to be the best decision my family and I have made. I am eternally grateful to him.

Henk was an ethical and responsible insurance leader and a wonderful friend and human being. Our hearts go out to Pam and his family.

Henk was a very special person in the New York insurance market. His dictum that "good" people can always work together to find a common path has remained a tested and true foundation for many of his business partners. He left us early and will be sorely missed by those who were fortunate to know him. Bill Eckstein, New York, N.Y.

Henk was so special to me that words can never express what he meant to me. He was my mentor and advisor throughout my insurance career. Much of the success that I (and many others who worked for him) accomplished in our careers we owe to Henk. Most importantly, he was a good friend who you always could rely on when you needed advise or help. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Henk was a most gracious, warm host when I met him at his former home in NJ. Pam and I worked together, and I was invited for a get-together with other colleagues. I will always remember his kindness and welcoming manner. My most sincere condolences to Pam and to all Henk's family.

Although I never met Mr. Koot, I am moved by his service to God and humanity. As a fellow United Methodist, I am greatly appreciative of his efforts to improve the quality of life for all of God's creation. He epitomizes the best of the United Methodist tradition of serving God with love and compassion, wherever it is needed. JKS

I will never forget Henk We had many wonderful times together. I was actually with him the day he met Pam. He took a chance with me and without his help I would never be where I am today. Truly one of the best (and fairest) men I ever met. Our world has lost someone "special". May God Bless you Henk. You will be missed. Jerry Zaloom

Henk was a great guy, a true leader at Atlantic Mutual, and always cared deeply about his work and his staff. He helped to shape the careers of many people, and he gave others inspiration by showing he was never afraid to stand up for what was right. He will be remembered & missed by many.
