Helen Thompson Obituary

Helen Monroe Thompson GREENVILLE, SC - Helen Monroe Thompson, 64, died at home on February 11, 2015 after a long struggle with breast cancer. Helen was born on September 26, 1950 in Statesboro, GA, to parents Dr. Shelby Hardy Monroe and Helen Enecks Monroe. She was an elementary school teacher for many years, after graduating from Georgia Southern University with a teaching degree. After settling in Mt. Pleasant, SC and taking an extended break as a stay-at-home mom, Helen went back to school for her Masters in Library Science degree and worked as the Media Specialist at Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island for many years. She reluctantly retired shortly after her breast cancer returned in 2006, and moved to Greenville to be closer to family and her beloved North Carolina mountain home. Helen was an avid reader and writer, having published some short works and a textbook on information literacy. She also enjoyed spending time with family, especially in the mountains or at the beach. Helen is survived by her husband of 40 years, A. Scott 'Scotty' Thompson; daughter, Susan Thompson Carlson and husband, Scott; son, Scott Monroe Thompson and wife Laura; grandchildren, Leah Carlson, Kathryn Carlson, Charlie Thompson and a granddaughter, due in March, all of Greenville. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances and Harrywood Gray, of Bainbridge, Georgia, a brother and sister-in-law, Shelby and Betty Monroe, of Fairview, Tennessee and other family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 10:30am at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home at 639 North Main Street in Greenville. Reverend Maggie Beamguard of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church of Charleston will be officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 9:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gentiva Hospice or the charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark O'Rourke and the staff of the GHS Cancer Institute for their years of treatment and nurses Charlette Jordan and Georgette Johnson for their excellent home care and friendship. I was so terribly sorry to hear that Helen lost her fight with cancer. She and I wrote a book together on Information Literacy and we worked closely together for 2 years on that project. I lost touch with her when you all moved. She was a sweet, fun and intelligent woman and she will be missed. I pray for peace and comfort for your family.

My heart is so heavy. I remember Helen fondly. Sixty-four is too young. But I know she is with God and at peace, free from pain and discomfort. May God's peace be with the family and remain with you.
