Helen Solomon Obituary

Helen Solomon 1916 - 2009 PITTSFIELD Helen Solomon, of Treyton Oak Towers, Louisville, died June 29, at the age of 93. Helen was born in Pittsfield, on Feb. 10, 1916, to Aida Seiferth of Natchez, Miss., and Dr. Albert Charles England of Pittsfield. Helen had three brothers, Albert Jr., Jonathan and Richard England. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1937. Wellesley was a very important influence and a source of pride all through her life and she kept up with many of her college friends. Later in 1937 she married Justin Albert Godchaux, with Godchaux Sugar Company of New Orleans. They had three children, Sally England, Jane Aline, and Justin Albert Jr. Helen volunteered and served on numerous boards in New Orleans, including the League of Women Voters, the American Red Cross, Flint Goodrich Hospital, Dillard University, Goodwill Industries and Isidore Newman School. She was also a "pink lady" at Touro Infirmary for over 20 years. She was widowed in 1970 and later married Dr. Edwin P. Solomon, of Louisville. Helen loved bridge and played in a weekly game with friends and at the Louisville Bridge Center. She took up tennis at age 60 and played in several regular doubles games around town and on the tennis court at Coach Gate. Helen again volunteered, serving on the board of the Ronald McDonald House and Goodwill Industries. She loved the Eline Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library and was never without a book to read. Helen was a member and supporter of The Temple and a proud Life Member of the National Council of Jewish Women. She was also a member of the Wellesley Club in Louisville. She leaves her brother, Richard "Dick" England, of Washington, DC; her daughter, Jane Godchaux Emke and son-in-law, Bert Emke, of Louisville; her son, Justin Godchaux, of Savannah, Ga., and his wife, Karin Wenzer; and stepson, Donald Solomon, of Sebastopol, Calif. She also leaves six grandchildren, Aaron Emke, Devin Emke, Britt Doughty-Godchaux, Kelly Godchaux Olin, Justin Godchaux III and Frank Endom III; and five great-grandchildren, Noah, Sally and Levi Emke and Katarina and Ian Endom. MEMORIAL NOTICE: Donations in Helen's memory may be given either to the Ronald McDonald House, 550 S. First St., Louisville 40202, or to the Louisville Free Public Library Foundation, 301 York Street, Louisville 40203. A memorial service will held at a later date in the chapel of The Temple.

I was saddened to learn the news of Helen's death. Visits to Treyton Oak Towers were always enlivened by her witty conversation and zest for life. My deep condolences to all who loved and cared for her so devotedly. I it is a consolation to think that the greatest tribute we can make to a loved one who has left us is to incorporate their best qualities into our own lives. In Helen's Case, that is certainly worthy of the challenge.

To Mrs Jane Emke and family:
I just learned of the death of your beloved, Helen, from Assurance Health Care and I offer my condolences to all. She was a very good and elegant lady. It was my deep pleasure to care for her, even for just a short time.
Regards,
Judith Divine

Helen has been a part of my and my husband Bill's lives since the mid-1960's. I worked at Paramount Foods with Justin Godchaux, her first husband, for 8 years. Dr. Solomon delivered our two sons, George and Scott, who are now 38 and 35 years old. Helen, I thought you would live forever. You were quite "feisty" and a beautiful woman. May you rest in peace.

Helen, we are happy to have known you. We enjoyed traveling with you. You were always a "sparkling part" of our cruises. We'll miss you. Tom & Anita Perryman
