Helen Saunders Obituary

SAUNDERS, Helen SAVANNAH - Helen Cameron Saunders, 88, died January 2, 2007 at her daughter's residence in Baxley, Georgia. She was born November 16, 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina to Lillian Rebecca Rowe Cameron and William Duncan Cameron. She moved her family to Savannah in midlife but later returned home to her beloved Charleston. She also lived a number of years in Columbia, South Carolina and Baxley, Georgia. She was active in churches everywhere she lived. Her home church was St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Charleston, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the ladies circle for many years. While living in Savannah she was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and involved in many church activities. She also attended St. Thomas Aquinas Episcopal Church in Baxley and the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Columbia. She served as a hospital volunteer in the Ladies Auxiliary in Charleston and Baxley. She was an avid bridge and canasta player. She was the beloved wife of the late Hendley Miller Saunders, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn Saunders Carter and Robert T. Carter of Baxley, Georgia; two granddaughters and their husbands, Allison and Lee Newberry of Springfield, Georgia and Cristina and Brian Arnold of Cochran, Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Sydney Newberry, Trent Newberry, Carter Arnold, Rebecca Arnold and Breanna Arnold and many dear cousins. Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Graveside Service: 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2006 in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
