Helen Laney Obituary

Helen Green Laney CHARLESTON - Helen Green Laney, 77, passed away peacefully in her home on February 19, 2023, in Charleston, SC. Her funeral service will be held Friday, February 24, 2023, in Epworth United Methodist Church, 1540 Camp Road, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. A lifelong Charlestonian, Helen was born in 1945, daughter of the late Julius "JJ" Coachman Green and Sara Trenholm Green. She grew up on Bee Street before moving to Wentworth later in her childhood. Helen married Ralph in 1965, and the couple ultimately settled on James Island, where they have spent the last 50 years. After raising her own children and going on the assumption that grandchildren were not imminent, Helen started teaching children at Linda O'Quinns on Harborview Road. She loved children and the children loved her. Once grandchildren came into the picture, they quickly became her priority with weekly outings and overnights. Helen is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ralph; her son, Ralph Langford Laney III (Maggie); daughter, Katherine Laney Schiller (Matthew); beloved grandchildren: Emily Gyles Laney, Anna Katherine Schiller, Margaret Trenholm Laney (Mattie) and Matthew Langford Schiller. In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her sister, Emily Green House; brother-in-law, Markus "Mark" House; and her stepmother, Doris "Dody" Cart Green. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Ralph and Helen's longtime church: Epworth United Methodist Church, 1540 Camp Road, James Island, SC 29412 or to Lutheran Hospice of Mt. Pleasant, 1885 Rifle Range Road, #46, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, who offered an invaluable service during Helens last days. Helen was such a wonderful lady. She was one of the first people that Rossie Webber and I worked with at O´Quinn. It was a privilege to work with her and to call her my friend.

Helen taught both of my sons at O'Quinn School. I then had the privilege of working with her for several years. She touched so many children's lives in such a positive manner. She truly was a wonderful lady. Sending all of you my love and prayers.

Ralph and your Son and Daughter,
We are so sorry for the loss of your wife and Mother that was so much of a special Lady to all who knew her and her Church Family at Epworth.sWe know it hurts more than any words or gestures can make. But she has her Wings now in Heaven and among her family and friends that have went before her. We also knows how much hurt she went through and the one that the rest of you went through. We know the harderst part was someone so loving to her family and friends of not knowing who we all were. But, now she is whole again and we know looking out for all and knows all too. And you well know if there is anything Annie or I can do as well as your Church Family that we will be there for all of you in this time grief and happiness.

Helen was such a help to Martha Lavelle and me when we first began teaching at the O’Quinn School 30 years ago.
