Hazel Pippin Obituary

Hazel Estelle Pippin N. Charleston - Hazel Estelle Norman Pippin, 91, of North Charleston, widow of W. G. Pippin, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017, at her residence. Born on June 14, 1926, in Lincolnton, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late John Stokes Norman and Pearl Spires Norman. Upon graduation from Lincoln County High School in the midst of World War II, she found employment at the Arsenal in Augusta, Georgia. She later transferred to the Charleston Naval Shipyard where she worked as a Supply Clerk. It was in Charleston that she met a young sailor, also from Georgia. She married W. G. Pippin at the end of the war and they made their home in North Charleston. She faithfully loved and cherished her husband and mourned his passing on December 29, 2016. They were married for 71 years. In that time, they enjoyed gardening, shrimping, spending time with family, and regular visits to their second home in Round Oak, Georgia. Her interests also included bowling, sewing and surprising her family as an accomplished "shade tree mechanic." Upon her arrival in Charleston, she was called both Estelle and Hazel. However, as the youngest of nine children, she was known strictly as "Doll Baby" by her family; the name to which she is lovingly referred today. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded by her three sisters and five brothers: Christine (Brad) Peeksen, Mary Emma Becham, Thelma (Bob) Doiron, George (Alice) Norman, Claude (L.E.) Norman, John (Glennie) Norman, Albert (Joel) Norman and Grady Norman. She is survived by her sister-in-law and brother; Grady's widow, Juanita Norman; and a host of nieces and nephews extending several generations. Bill and Estelle were the parents of a son, Randall A. "Randy" Pippin of Hanahan, SC, and a daughter, Sharon P. Axson and her husband David, of Hanahan, SC. They were blessed with four grandchildren: Dionne Bouknight of Charlotte, NC; Angela P. (Stephen) Allen of Barnesville, GA; Bryan R. (Reanna) Pippin of Jonesboro, GA, and William G. Axson (Charise) of Moncks Corner, SC; and nine great-grandchildren: Ashton Bouknight, Morgan Bouknight, Zachary Allen, Bryce Allen, Gracie Allen, Ariel Pippin, Carrigan Romines, Andrew Clayton, and Jonathan Axson. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. The family would like to acknowledge the selfless dedication and devotion of the small army of "angels" God sent to care for our parents in their final years, enabling them to remain in their home and its familiar surroundings. The names are too numerous to list, but we would like to recognize Ms. Christina Avey and Ms. Michelle Chandler for their extraordinary service during some extremely trying times. Memorials may be directed to North Charleston United Methodist Church, 1125 E. Montague Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405 or Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Omar Shrine Center, 176 Patriots Point Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Randall - I don't know if you remember living on South Rhett off the Park Circle - I think around 1945 ish. The Ellis's lived next door. I'm Arthureen and we moved there when I was approx 2 - that was in 1944. You and I used to play together with my brother, Bubbie. I'm sorry about the loss of your mom. I hope you are doing well. It sounds like you will have good memories to remember her by.

From my family and Mother, Juanita, we send our deepest sympathy on the passing of your Mom.
I have fond memories of her upbeat personality and smile and have great admiration for her care and devotion to her family. Mother will certainly miss The calls from "Doll Baby".

By-the-way,
I think I must have been at least 12 years old before I realized her name was really Estelle. :)

May you and family find encouraging comfort knowing that others care for you during your painful loss.
