Hazel was terrific ! She had a singularly deft delivery of the moniker "sweetheart" for obstreperous
rascals that made its mark .
Thank you Hazel .

Gracious Lady. I was part of North Charleston that had track meets and all other sports events that included Ms. Hazels program. She was a real sweet lady and by all means, I definitely remember the ball caps the old car and the socks. We had a lot of fun at the playgrounds. I was involved with the Danny Jones era. Many friendships derived from all this competition. Rest in peace dear heart.

My siblings and I made a daily B-line for Hazel's arts and crafts materials in the summers of the early 1960s at the EBPG "barn." The cracked weathered door, rough beat-up wooden floor, the ping-pong tables, the play dough, the popsicle sticks, Elmers glue...
And when she locked up and went home, it was in that beautiful, like-new, polished black antique car. Antique even then. Slowly away, up East Bay Street. Hazel always drove slowly. "Never, ever a ding" she told me in my 50s.
With dignity she lived her life and supervised us "chillun." What a wonderful example of a quiet, practicing Christian.
I'll miss her.

Charleston has lost a great woman. It was a great honor just to talk to such an amazing woman. She was such a kind and caring person, always thinking of others and never turning away from a child or animal in need. God Bless you Miss Hazel.

Hazel had an incredibly positive impact on my life and so many others'. She cared so much about "her kids", and the feeling was mutual. Charleston was a better place because of her.

All my life I have known and loved you. You were my strength and guidance when times got tough. I loved coaching and monitoring the dances. We had great times together on and off the park. You will never be forgotten for you were loved by all the children who for many generations played on the playground. Have fun with your canine kids and don't forget to check on God's little angels to see if they need a push on the swing to go higher and higher. Charleston will never be the same without you. Peace and Blessings.

I grew up with Miss Hazel and have seen her numerous times over the last years at McDonalds and shared a hamburger and talked about the old days. I wish we had more Hazels. She was one of a kind.

Another Charleston legend has slipped away. Her efforts at East Bay Playground were dedicated. "No shoes ,, no entrance" and her unique car she maintained for so many years. Harleston Village has lost a great person. You saints had better get your shoes on.
