He was a great officer who did the right thing for all he associated with, especially the Citadel cadets. I am 92, but remember him well. Thanks for posting this in his honor! Phil Clayton, class of 1953.

I was there when he played stickball with ROJAM in 3rd Btn... I never had to see him for disciplinary reasons but went to his office to ask for a favor of the heart. He granted it and I ended up 6 months later married. I saw him for inspections a few times. Very great man. I wish I'd known him better. I should have probably gotten in trouble more! Well met, my friend and good journey. Toby/Jerry Wilson ,India Company, Class of '86

May God bless each of you at this difficult time. I think Harvey led a life that is to be celebrated as he touched so many lives. He had an infectious smile and loved to laugh. To all of the family, May you feel a peace about you knowing that he is in Heaven looking down and smiling on everyone, especially those at The Citadel. Hel loved The Citadel as much as anyone I know.

Dear Margie. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Harvey was an amazing man. He was a true Citadel man ...wearing the Ring of Gold with pride and honor. He was a real"Bulldog" and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He touched thousands of lives as a leader, mentor, friend and family man. He was a Godly man, a true American and a distinguished member of the Citadel family. He can never be replaced in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. I remember my last conversation with him...he called our house to thank us for our support of the Citadel. His love of the Citadel and those who are a part of the Citadel family was so apparent to all who knew him. He will live on forever in our hearts. Our lives are better for having known him. God bless him and God bless you Margie and those he left behind. There is another angel in heaven...he is looking over all of us now. Peace be with you and your family during this difficult time. Much love

Col Dick was one of the first people I met when I began my knob year in 1979 and through all my years at The Citadel he demonstrated a remarkable balance of justice and compassion. He had a daunting task to assume his duties while the legendary Boo was still on campus serving in a different capacity from the one for which he will always be remembered. Col Dick handled that situation with tremendous grace and dignity. I hope that others who observe my life will one day be able to say that I've demonstrated these characteristics half as good as Harvey Dick. My prayers are for peace of mind and heart for those of you whom he left behind.

I would have to say that Col. Dick was a very passionate man, about The Citadel, his family, his country. I loved him. Even though I was not a grad, but worked there, he made me feel every bit a part of the College as a grad. I'll always appreciate him for that. You too, Margie. God bless.

Colonel Dick was an outstanding member of the Washington Light Infantry. He served in so many capacites in the unit.He was a humble and God fearing man. In addition he loved the United States of America and those who serve her in harm's way world wide. He was a giant that walked among us and was the epitome of The Citadel Man. He will be sorely missed. HOOAH. SIR

There is a void here on earth today, we have lost a great one.LTC Harvey Dick loved God,his country and his alma mater, The Citadel,. He was a mentor to thousands of cadets and will always be known for his fairness and integrity. He served The Citadel in many ways after his retirement, but his biggest joy was raising funds for cadet student athletes through the Citadel Brigadier Foundation. We will miss him greatly but never forget him!

Thirty six years later I can still remember my first encounter with LTC Dick. A memory I will never forget. It was a long and bumpy road we traveled together. We formed a great relationship over many years. A great man, mentor, and friend.

We were deeply saddened to learn that Harvey Dick passed away. I served on The Citadel's faculty for a number of years before leaving to take an administrator's position at another institution. My wife Martha was actively involved in The Citadel Women's Club. It is through that association that we first grew to know Harvey and Margie Dick. We were instantly impressed by the depth of loyalty and passion that members of the Citadel community had for the College but we never completely understood it until we watched Harvey Dick live each of its ideals―God, country, honor, and duty each and every day of his life. Harvey, a military officer and Southern gentleman, commanded respect because of his towering stature and demeanor. But there was much more, for Harvey Dick was a gentle, considerate, and devout man whose Christian principles led him to genuinely care about others. He manifested his concern by helping people grow in their commitment to core values and faith. Harvey worked tirelessly on behalf of The Citadel, yet more than anything, he cared about the cadets, employees, and alumni many of whom he personally reared, mentored, and advised alongside of his own family. It is a blessing to have known Harvey Dick and we celebrate his life knowing that he is in the company of angels. This unpretentious man left a giant footprint and we will miss our friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dick family. We pray that God's peace and grace will be with them during these times.

Ms. Margie-
Sean and I have you in thoughts and prayers for the weeks and days ahead. Mr. Harvey was so sweet, and I will always hold a special place in my heart for the two of you. You two were the first ones to welcome me to The Cathedral 5 years ago this month. Anytime I ever saw him he always gave me a great big hug. Thank you for being such a great friend. Our love to you.

A man of exacting fairness and compassion for those deserving (and perhaps some who weren't, like me). He had the God given ability to judge your character in a nano second..... and be 100% correct. I'm saddened by the loss of a mentor and hope the Lord knows Heaven's in for one heck of an SMI!

There is now a hole in the universe that may never be filled. Men such as this are of the rarest breed. When I count my blessings I place my memories of LTC Dick in a class by itself. Not many are worthy of such company as his. I certainly am not one. Greatness was his indeed. Greg Eklund '91 (Aiken SC)

While we mourn the loss and share the sadness of the Dick family, let us also celebrate the life of a man who gave definition to the very ideals of The Citadel and the whole person concept. All of us who knew and were touched by his character, should aspire to live our lives accountable to his standards of both honor and compassion.

Colonel Dick meant so much to so many. The thousands of cadets who had a relationship with him and the many soldiers who served wth him were influenced by his leadership, discipline and charming personality. I am one of the lucky ones to have known Colonel Dick as a cadet and on active duty as a TAC Officer at The Citadel. By knowing Colonel Dick I became a better person, both professionally, personally and sprirtually. As a TAC officer I patterned my leadership, teaching, discipline and genuine care of the cadets after Colonel Dick. He was one of the most genuine people I have ever met. He was also as fine a Christian as I have ever known. As Episcopalians, my first wife Judy loved talking to him about the Church and had a special place in her heart for him. I was so glad that my wife Lynn got to know him as well and she too has a special place in her heart for him. When you were in his presence he knew you and he made you feel like you were the most important person in his life at that moment. Col Dick was The Citadel and he will be missed.

My wife, Teddy and I offer our utmost sympathy to Margie and the rest of Harvey's family on their loss of this great representative of The Citadel and the Christian faith. He has served so many noble causes in his long life that he will always be remembered for the superlative example he was of a Citadel graduate and classmate. May our Lord's love and strength surround each of you as you endure the sadness of losing one who was so much loved by so many. Our class of 1953 could not have had a better representative for all these years. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Margie,
Tracy and I send our deepest sympathies; you both always made us feel so welcomed in your home. Your selfless commitment to one another, and to The Citadel family, helped set an example for so many of us to emulate. The colonel was a formidable influence in my life from cadet hood through to Marine Corps retirement. I am a better man because of him, and mine is only one of a thousand such stories. I am so thankful God allowed our lives to cross one another.

I will miss the Colonel in his regular pew at the Cathedral of St Luke and St Paul at the 8am service on Sunday mornings. When the Colonel went down on his knees to pray, you knew that The Citadel was always in his prayers. He was faithful to his Lord, his country, his wife and family, and The Citadel. Colonel Dick was every inch a Citadel Man. Tom Horton, Citadel Class of 1972

Colonel Harvey Dick was great Ameican,a true Citadel Man,a wonderful mentor and a friend. I was a freshman at The Citadel when Colonel Dick was named Asssitant Commandant.Over the years we developed a lasting frienship and he always treated me like family. He loved The Citadel, her corps of cadets and all she stood for. His years of service to The Citadel as assistant commandant, with The Brgadier Club and his years on the Board of Visitors secured his legacy among Citadel alumni. When judged by his wealth of friends Harvy Dick was one of the richest men I knew. He will be missed but never forgotten. May God bless Miss Margie and his family during this time of loss. I will miss him.
