Harry Vogel Obituary

VOGEL, Harry Harry Vogel, 88, passed peacefully yesterday at MUSC Hospital, as friends and family gathered at his side. All who were touched by Mr. Vogel are invited to attend the funeral services, Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Emanu-El Cemetery (Maryville). Shiva will be held at Mr. Vogel's residence, 77 Rebellion Road, from Wednesday, July 11, 2007 to Friday afternoon, July 13, 2007. Mr. Vogel was born in New York City on June 12, 1919, the son of Nathan and Rebecca Vogel. He was a strong believer in education, and achieved a college degree in Chemical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic, a Masters degree from City College of New York and an Executive MBA from the University of Virginia. Mr. Vogel served in the military during WWII and achieved the rank of Major with the Army Air Corps. Upon leaving the military, he worked most of his life with Stein-Hall Corporation (later part of Celanese Corporation), and moved to Charleston in 1959 to open a new state-of-the-art chemical processing plant on East Bay Street, providing employment to up to 100 employees. He remained committed to the company and its employees for his remaining working career spanning almost 40 years, and retired as General Manager of the plant in the late 1980's. Following his retirement, Harry Vogel remained active in the community, returning to his support for education by serving on the Board of Trident Technical College and volunteering at Synagogue Emanu-El, among others. When Marion, his loving wife of 50 years, became a victim of Alzheimer's Disease in 1997, he totally immersed himself in her care and support until her death in 2002. Most recently, he spent 3 days per week volunteering at Roper Hospital, focusing on patient care and helping others who faced traumatic health issues. Surviving him are a brother Ben Vogel of Southern California, two daughters: Nancy V. Feldman of Savannah, Georgia and Joan Vogel of White River Junction, Vermont; two sons: Stephen Vogel of Cincinnati, Ohio and Richard Vogel of Austin, Texas; and four grandchildren: Daniel Feldman of Eugene, Oregon Amanda Feldman Gorodeski of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Philip Vogel and Leland Vogel both of Cincinnati, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the Charleston Humane Society or Roper Hospital Foundation. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
